Bob was feeling a consistent, sharp pain in his abdomen. Following imaging tests and a biopsy, Bob was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Large B-cell Lymphoma. Within days of meeting Dr. Wael Harb, medical oncologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, Bob had a bone marrow extraction, CT scan, heart MUGA scan, and a chest port implanted so that he could start chemotherapy later that week. After six rounds of chemotherapy, Bob’s cancer is now in remission. “Dr. Harb saved my life,” said Bob. “Prior to my diagnosis, things were moving slowly but once I found Dr. Harb, he got things moving quickly and treated my diagnosis with urgency. He was my advocate and fought for me throughout my treatment. He and his team made me feel like I was more than just a number.” Bob is now back to enjoying life with his family and continues to receive follow-up scans to ensure his cancer stays in remission.

Although DCIS breast cancer is considered stage 0, do not take this to mean you are out of danger. This was my diagnosis and many told me "not to worry...no big deal...caught it early." However, I had it in a couple of places. This resulted in a double mastectomy. There was only a 5% chance that they (pathologist) would discover anything else in the breast tissue - I was in that 5%. Although my risk for recurrence is low (10-20%), it is not zero. Hence, undergoing chemo and Herceptin treatments. HER2+ (me also) is an aggressive component and the deciding factor to receive treatment. I am posting this so that you are not blind sided by DCIS.

🔵 Breast cancer incidence is rising, especially among younger women, making it crucial to recognize the earliest signs and symptoms. 🔵 Catching #breast #cancer early significantly improves survival rates, as the likelihood of dying decreases in earlier stages. 🔵 One of the earliest signs is the presence of a lump or mass in the breast tissue or armpit, which necessitates medical evaluation. 🔵 Regular breast self-exams, while their efficacy in detecting cancer early is debated, are easy to perform and can help identify changes. 🔵 Changes in breast size or shape, particularly in one breast, should be investigated, as they could indicate breast cancer. 🔵 Any alterations in the skin of the breast, such as dimpling, puckering, or rash-like changes, should be examined by a doctor. 🔵 Changes in the nipple, including inversion, discharge (especially bloody), or size changes, require medical attention. 🔵 While breast pain is usually not associated with breast cancer, new onset pain should be evaluated, particularly for inflammatory breast cancer. 🔵 Notably, the most common symptom of breast cancer is no symptoms at all, underscoring the importance of regular screening exams starting around age 40. 🔵 Screening modalities such as mammograms or MRIs are sensitive for detecting early breast cancer, while thermography is not recommended for early screening. 🔵 Early detection is key to successful treatment and potential cure of breast cancer, highlighting the significance of promptly addressing any signs or symptoms. https://lnkd.in/gS_GMQ6r

What are some commonly missed or delayed diagnoses? Today we will focus on breast cancer. “Although inflammatory breast cancer only represents 1% to 5% of all breast cancers in the United States, it is a sneaky disease and challenging to diagnose. It is critical that clinicians have a high level of familiarity with its subtle signs and be prepared to take immediate action to avoid belated diagnosis,” said Dr. Ko Un Park, a surgical oncologist who leads the new inflammatory breast cancer program at the OSUCCC – James’ Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center. Today is #GlioblastomaAwarenessDay. Three years ago, I had no idea what #Glioblastoma was. Not until my mom was diagnosed with #GBM in 2021 and lost her battle after 10 short months. GBM is the most common of all primary malignant brain tumors, yet remains fairly unresearched with only 4 FDA approved drugs to treat it. GBM is one of the most complex, deadly, and treatment-resistant cancers. Today, I ask that we spread awareness about GBM and inspire others to take action to ensure better treatments and cures for GBM patients. #GBMDay Learn more about how you can get involved here: https://lnkd.in/g7YP_xrP
