Business Strategist at Chicago Bears Football Club

I am so incredibly proud and grateful that the Chicago Bears extended the National Football League (NFL) #MyCauseMyCleats initiative to the front office staff. I painted 2 different Nike sneakers, but both are to support the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Illinois Region, an amazing nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. Specifically, they’re to support Austin and Charlotte, two amazing kids, both blood cancer survivors. 🐻 My first sneaker is for "Team Charlotte", Charlotte was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia before she was even a year old. I’ll never forget getting the call from Kristin, and how their world would be forever changed. Kristin and I have been close friends and co-workers for almost 20 years, and we were lucky enough to spend our maternity leave together in 2016. We had weekly play dates, Christmas crafts, and lots of HGTV. Kristin is one of the strongest women you’ll ever meet, I still don’t know how she did it, but it’s not surprising considering what she’s made of. Charlotte’s Dad Will?  A true friend with the biggest heart, and he was honored as the 2019 Illinois Man of the Year for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, an unbelievable honor. I’ll be forever grateful on how the Chicago Bears family rallied around this incredibly strong and brave little girl, Charlotte!   🥅 My second sneaker is for "Austin’s Army", Austin has played hockey with my son Billy since they were 4, and is a star goaltender. The Antells were our first hockey friends, and they have become family to us. We get together often, vacation together, and hang out into the wee hours during hockey tournaments. People think his parents Adam and Mandy have been our lifelong friends because of our special bond and friendship, even though we’ve known each other less than 10 years. I received another unimaginable call from Mandy, in late July 2022, telling us the news. Austin had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Burkitt B Cell Lymphoma at 9 years old. Our hockey team rallied around “Austin’s Army” and so did the entire hockey community, it is such a special group of families.  Austin rang the bell in November 2022, and was back to playing hockey that month. If you think beating cancer is tough, try scoring on him on a breakaway or a shootout, because it isn’t easy! 💛 My hope is that continued awareness and support for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Illinois Region allows more and more kids to keep fighting, not fight the battle alone, and SHUT OUT cancer!  #TeamCharlotte #AustinsArmy

Way to go Melissa McDermott. My Sister-in-Law succumbed to Leukemia many years ago and my wife honors her daily. Both are fantastic causes. ❤️
