Founder & Director, Motion Light Lab at Gallaudet University, Digital Strategist, Artist, Advocate, Storyteller

When thinking about career choices, I’ve always thought about what kind of meaningful work can I do. What and how can I contribute my time, energy, and resources to that brings me a sense of purpose? My career path was unchartered, and instead of going for a specific career, I created my own opportunities. I founded Motion Light Lab as a response to a huge gap in creating research-based resources to support literacy development for Deaf children. Let me also emphasize this: I never worked 'solo', it was always relationship-building, trust-building, and team-building. I worked with so many brilliant Deaf creatives, storytellers and artists, I am humbled by them. I did not arrive there quickly; I actually held different jobs, and in addition to jobs, I also volunteered, joined organizations, did community organizing, and did a lot of school! I am grateful for these experiences because they helped me think outside of the box, and learn new skills. However, I won’t lie– I was also impatient. I wanted to land my “dream gig” but looking back, the journey was what it was all about. I learned to trust myself. 🚀 And, our work does not define the human beings we are. We define ourselves. On a last note…  always keep your eyes, mind, and heart open. Question how things are done, and who is left out, ignored or marginalized. How can we do better? How can we be allies, how can we create a supportive community? All these thoughts lead to an inclusive and equitable culture. And, this is the BEST kind of team. 💫 Thank you LinkedIn News for spotlighting changemaker skills and mindsets and inviting my reflections for #GetStarted. #Changemakers #AshokaFellows LinkedIn News Motion Light Lab Ashoka Ashoka U.S. (Pictured below: me in a motion capture suit, working on creating fluent signing 3D avatars in the lab. True and I have experienced the same.. some choices were like okay! But it’s brought more depth in my thinking and how to approach things as an educator, social service provider and a professional in my private practice. I count my blessings daily for being able to do all that
