Today I'm starting a weekly newsletter. And it's not about education or social justice or anything else that I've spent my whole life thinking about. So I'm only going to post this here once in this space where I'm mainly an educator and advocate.
It's about women's sports (the newsletter).
I'm a girldad, and I love sports. So when my younger daughter was born, I stopped watching men's. I want my children to grow up with heroes that look like them. I want them to feel free to look confused (or bored) if they see football on TV. I want them to hear and see stories of strong and multidimensional women who play, and laugh, and work hard together, and who do incredible and remarkable things as athletes and people.
It's become a passion for me (and for them as well). So I've decided to share that passion with y'all, to be a guide for the girldads and girlmoms, the girlparents and girl allies of all roles and gender identities, to casually follow women's sports armed with enough knowledge to cultivate your daughter's interest or ignite her passion for another activity in which she can be the best version of herself.
You can subscribe to the girldad sports newsletter here: www.girldadsports.net.
Each week it's five quick things that you can talk about or watch with your daughters over the weekend. This week (our first) it's Wimbledon, the FIBA Americup, USATF Nationals, the US Women's Open, and the PHF / PWHPA merger. (Or tennis, basketball, track, golf, and hockey, respectively). I'll drop a World Cup Preview Guide early next week. (I guess I don't know how to be anything if not comprehensive).
We are blessed to live an era where women's sports is growing palpably. Our family is Angel City Football Club season ticket holders (from day one) and I love that it's normal for my kids to sit among 20,000+ people every few weeks singing and chanting for the incredible squad of super-women we're blessed to support. We take that feeling everywhere we go, from USC Athletics women's basketball to UCLA gymnastics and softball, from the pyramid at California State University, Long Beach to the relays at Mt. San Antonio College. And we want to bring it to you too.
There is a huge market for women's sports. But beyond the super-focused niches and the deep analysis and punditry of the dozens of podcasts and newsletters that I listen to and read, there's a huge market for casual fans too. My goal with this newsletter is to create a community of girlparents and girl allies that demonstrate that massive market. It's easy... it's brief. It's no hot-takes, no haters, just hype for these athletes and hope for these children. Please join me!
