How to Save and Name your Resume document…you can only imagine how many resumes we receive and have seen over the years. And before we even get to review the content we can be amazed at how the PDF or Word document is saved and named. This is your first opportunity at presenting yourself as a serious, professional in a clear and concise way. We will always recommend First name Last name Resume….Melissa Latham Resume. That’s it. No dates, no “revised”, no “merchandising resume” or “marketing resume” (then it’s known there are other versions), no 2.0, no “final”…nothing but those 3 words. You can certainly save it on your computer anyway you want but please rename it clearly and concisely before sending it off. We often see resumes attached to emails without even the candidate ‘s name! MLmerch062624 2.0 is a great example of how they can come across. If that attachment becomes separated from the email there is no quick way to determine who you are. You are always representing your brand whether it is verbally, in written form and visually. Make the right first impression by taking this first step.

Transitioning into a leadership role is never easy, especially when you're striving to build trust, communication, and support within your team. This is an almost guaranteed question you will get (or should get) in an interview. Do you know how you are going to respond? Have you thought about what is important to share? This is a question that you can prepare a response to in advance. As a prior retail executive, hiring manager and owner of an executive search firm I know what I am looking to hear. I want to learn a balance of who you are as a human as well as a professional. Many people immediately launch into their career when they answer that question….completely glossing over anything about them personally. I want to know where you are from, what is of interest to you, what do you do on the weekends (aka hobbies and interests), anything you want to share about family/friends? I start every interview off this way with anyone I meet…you’d be amazed at the responses. I learn so much about who people are and they are so willing to share. Plus, I almost always find something on common with them. The rest of the conversation becomes about their career, experiences, expertise, etc. So what would you say? Here is what I would say… Thanks for asking! I am originally from New York and have lived all over the country for my previous career. I studied music in college, developed a love for international travel and a passion for sailing. I’m a big foodie and appreciate wine & art….and now live in the best place to experience all of that in Charleston, SC. Even that brief opening can provide insight into what my interests are which could spark conversation of commonality. Think about what YOUR response would be.
