Wow, what an incredible kickoff to #BESummit24! Breakthrough Energy and Microsoft share an important belief: innovation will play a critical role in addressing the global climate challenge. Together technology, policy, and investment can help catalyze innovation at the scale we need at this moment. In 2021 Microsoft announced a $100 million grant to Breakthrough Energy Catalyst through our Climate Innovation Fund to further accelerate the development of the climate solutions the world needs to reach net-zero. Since then, we have continued to partner with Breakthrough Energy to scale markets and innovation through co-investments and continued partnership. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to share the framework that guides how we think about climate investment at Microsoft and the role AI can play: Horizon 1: Building the infrastructure we need to realize AI’s full potential for accelerating sustainability. This includes how we sustainably design, build, and operate our physical infrastructure, advancing AI and sustainability skills, and developing the model capabilities for AI. Horizon 2: Realizing the full potential of our existing tools. Accelerating sustainability progress with the use of AI isn’t isolated to creating new tools and materials, it’s also about improving the efficiency of our existing assets. Horizon 3: Investing in tools that don’t exist today. Creativity and imagination play a unique role here and it requires commitment to exploration. AI, combined with the power of scientific expertise, can help create innovative solutions for sustainable energy at the speed and scale we need. Meaningful climate progress takes each and every one of us. I'm looking forward to continuing these discussions and invite you to join us as we look to next horizon for climate impact and the unique role AI can play in innovation.
Melanie, this is an inspiring vision for how AI can accelerate sustainability and climate action. Microsoft's partnership with Breakthrough Energy is a powerful example of the collaboration needed to drive innovation at scale. Thank you for sharing this framework and inviting us all to be part of the solution.
How to advance AI and implement all these groundbreaking tools without breaking the grid is what we at Buoyant Ventures have been thinking a lot about, along with Microsoft. So glad that we have you on the case Melanie Nakagawa.
I look forward to reading about your continued progress implementing environmental solutions.
Well said!
Great opportunity!
Great opportunity!
Hi miss
The lack of suitable tooling to support net zero pathway planning continues to astound me - something we are starting to address with our Decisio AI-assisted infrastructure planning platform, working with customers and stakeholder across the energy value chain. Great to see this as a focus area for #BESummit24! #BreakthroughEnergy and #Microsoft .
