The energy is palpable here in London at the Breakthrough Energy Summit where we’re convening entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists and partners to drive progress on climate technology and innovation. This is my maiden voyage as part of this world-class team. Here are my highlights from #BEsummit24 so far: ✨Being inspired by our incredible leaders at the opening plenary, Bill Gates, Rodi Guidero, Eric Toone ⚡️Walking our five innovation showrooms to meet with the founders of our portfolio companies and early stage fellows. These are the humans with the courage, creativity, and determination to tackle our thorniest problems. 🌱 Exchanging ideas and building relationships with the philanthropists, investors and policy makers who are funding this critical work and shaping the markets of the future. Please shout if you’re here and want to connect. Learn more about BE Summit 2024 Hub: https://nt-z.ro/3xxCTXk

Climate tech faces a funding challenge with a 40% YoY decline, but PwC's report suggests a silver lining. Lower valuations in the current market create opportunities for C-suite leaders to invest in innovative startups, drive sustainability goals, and gain a strategic edge in the race towards a sustainable future. Really enjoyed the Sifted Summit on Wednesday! And super to see lots of emphasis placed on climate tech 🌎 (even better to catch up with some WARRIOR WOMEN NETWORK buddies: Karla Morales-Lee and Sascha Evans and also to see Insiya Jafferjee of Shellworks in person!) Take homes: 💡 female founders are still massively missing out on VC funding - and some of that could be tackled by mandating investment committees with a more equal split of women. 💡 startups can get creative with revenue streams instead of doing many years of market fit/product dev without making any money. Investigate joint ventures or ways of deploying your IP that bring in revenue. 💡Sandra Steving Villegas at Founders Intelligence: for deeptech startups, demos and pilots are invaluable for securing private investment. Be transparent about the results and demonstrate how you’re going to adapt to real-world issues discovered during the pilot. 💡 Patrick Sheehan at ETF Partners: ‘I don’t believe in “climate tech”. It should just be the tech across every single sector that’s responding to our urgent planetary needs.’ [paraphrased]. I agree - so often I’ve seen “climate” or “low carbon” siloed as one of many themes at conferences or in strategies etc when it should really underpin everything. 💡 the reason why we might be seeing so much investment in SaaS-model-based climate tech is because according to Arne Morteani from Kiko Ventures, VCs have two golden rules: 1. Don’t invest in anything physical. 2. Don’t invest in anything affected by politics. … and unfortunately the tech we need to avert catastrophic climate and ecological breakdown breaks both of those rules! So a mindset shift is required. I loved what Tessa Clarke, Co-founder and CEO of Olio said: “The UK is uniquely well placed for purpose driven businesses. As the world’s problems become more pressing and loud, more people want to be part of the solution.” That’s certainly what I’m seeing as we get more businesses interested in joining our Oxfordshire Greentech network - we have so many of the solutions at our fingertips already. We need to deploy, connect, collaborate, solutionise, and invest at speed and scale into the solutions that will give us a better future. 💪🏻 ☀️
