This month's newsletter (34th) focusses heavily on safety on cattle farms, in support of WorkSafe Victoria's recently launched cattle safety campaign.
Our industry is not an inherently dangerous industry - many of the risks are manageable risks.
There are elements of safety within the industry that do have an inherent risk attached to them, such as weather and ground conditions, and the unpredictable behaviour of animals fits into this category. But, even allowing for that risk factor, there are a number of things that cattle farmers can do to ensure that they, their employees, contractors, vetinarians, livestock agents and livestock transport drivers leave their farms safely every day.
Good yards, good yard design, good crushes, good loading ramps are important engineering controls.
Training workers in safe cattle handling and ensuring adequate supervision are important administrative controls.
It is the least we can do!
