The rains in Dubai are yet another harsh reminder of the reality of climate change!! We all know addressing climate change requires both mitigation and adaptation. At Google we recognise the unique opportunity to empower individuals, organizations and governments with the data and tools they need to drive positive action for our planet. It also means using our deep legacy in research and the breakthroughs we’re making in AI to accelerate innovation that can tackle climate change. One example is Google Research’s program in India called AnthroKrishi. India's massive agricultural sector is a lifeline for millions, but farmers are at the biggest risk from climate crisis. AnthroKrishi uses AI to analyze satellite imagery and gain agricultural insights, allowing farmers to understand what types of crops to plant and where, as their fields change over time. Embracing AI for a Greener Future: Learn how Artificial Intelligence is driving sustainability efforts worldwide and reshaping our approach to environmental challenges This summer has created a much-needed and overdue wakeup call on climate change and climate action. Canada has experienced record-breaking fires with an area larger than the size of Belgium being burned and the fires continued to rage. Dozens of people have died due to flooding in the Himalayan region of India. The recent fires in Maui forced people to jump into the ocean to save themselves. Severe cyclones off the coast of East Africa has been so intense that they affected land-locked countries like Malawi and Zimbabwe. Climate change has severely contributed to the intensity and frequency of these events and it can be hard to know what we can do to help. AI is a powerful took that we can leverage to help in our fight to save our planet. One of AI’s strengths is data analytics and with our current technologies, it can analyse the present data from a variety of sources, including satellite imaging, sensors and other environmental monitoring devices. Companies can also use these data technologies to track and offset their own CO2 emissions and environmental impact. Food, water and electricity security can also be compromised by climate change and extreme weather events and climate change. AI can help with resource optimization. Sensors and data and can accurately monitor regions of concern in the ground that can trigger wildfires. AI can also optimize the use of valuable resources like water and raw materials, leading more efficient consumption and reduced waste. Energy-efficient systems can also be setup and implemented that reduce the amount of energy used and ensure a more reliable and sustainable energy supply. It can be scary to think about the future and overwhelming to find a solution.
