"British Columbia Health Minister Adrian Dix says almost all of the 666 international medical graduates registered in the province this year are now working as doctors, with more than half in family medicine. Dix notes that a new longitudinal payment model, which takes into account the time spent with patients and the complexity of their needs, is becoming more favoured by new doctors compared to the traditional fee-for-service model." Finding a family doctor in Canada is getting harder. Roughly six million Canadian adults don’t have access to a family doctor—up from 4.6 million in 2019. The situation is particularly alarming in rural communities where only 8% of physicians are serving nearly one-fifth of Canada’s population. The pain of this shortfall is already being felt in the broader healthcare system. Family doctors are often the first stop for patients seeking medical attention. And without quick access to them, patients are turning to emergency departments already overwhelmed by the pandemic. The crisis is set to deepen. Canada is estimated to be short nearly 44,000 physicians, including over 30,000 family doctors and general practitioners, before the end of the decade. Though 2,400 family physician positions were advertised on government websites by the end of 2021, just 1,496 family doctors exited residency training that year. https://lnkd.in/g_E9FvBZ

Meet Justin Federico, DO! He is an internal medicine hospitalist at #BaptistSouth. Q: When did you begin practicing medicine and how long have you been affiliated with Baptist Health? A: I began in July 2012 as soon as I graduated residency and finished my Chief Resident year. Q: How would you describe your specific field of practice? A: I always tell people that Internal Medicine is like a pediatrician for adults. I am a doctor who practices health promotion, disease prevention and medical (but not surgical) diagnostics/therapeutics in ambulatory (clinic) or acute care (hospital) settings. Q: What drove your passion for medicine and led you to become a doctor? A: What drove me to medicine was curiosity and a thirst for achievement. What keeps me in the profession is different now — service and gratitude. Every day is a humble answer of "yes" to the call to serve, even when it's challenging. What drives my pursuit of excellence is gratitude to make the most of the talents, opportunities and connections I've been blessed with to make each day possible. Q: What do you enjoy most about being a physician? A: Caring for my patients and explaining what's going on in a way that they can understand, empowers them and makes them an active participant in their care and healing. Also, teaching my medical students the most important lessons I have learned: to care for and treat each patient like a beloved family member. That's how to ensure I can look back at the end of the day and say, “I did my very best for my patients, dedicating all my time, energy and attention in the care I provided." Q: What is the most significant thing you've learned about caring for patients and the impact you have on their health? A: Being a doctor is a chance to bring God's love into the world in a unique and humbling way. Q: What does being a physician mean to you and have your feelings about this evolved over the years? A: What started as an intellectually challenging pursuit and a good career has become a ministry. I am more patient and kind, and an overall better man, husband and father because I care for those who are sick. Q: What would you like others to better understand about your role as a physician? A: Doctors need not just patients, but patience. Q: What do you like to do outside of work? A: I love the fellowship I have with my church family. But my greatest happiness is being at home raising my four children with my wife. #BaptistProud

While many qualified specialists leave the Irish health system after securing CSCST in Ireland, usually to undertake a Fellowship, the majority do return to work in Ireland in subsequent years. An example of this can be seen among those that received CSCST in 2019, where 78% were working in a public or private Consultant post by 2023. This is an important data point from the Retention Report as it demonstrates the number of Consultants that stay or return to Ireland to work. It was also noted that 87% of General Practitioners were working as a GP in Ireland at some point during the 12 months prior to Medical Council registration in 2022. Family Medicine is failing to attract physicians, and millions of Ontarians are left without a family doctor. The situation is only expected to worsen, and our healthcare system is suffering as a result. Emergency departments have long waits, and walking clinics are not efficient. It's clear that something needs to be done to address this crisis. The first step towards rebuilding our healthcare system is to make family medicine an attractive career choice. We need more family medicine physicians to address the growing demand for healthcare services. This is a critical issue that affects all of us, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer. The twelve-month program, involving 34 medical practitioners, focuses on compassion-based contemplative practices and includes training in meditation, mindfulness, and relationship building.
