we need to talk about salaries and churn in the private forensic science providers in 2014 the average staff cost for Cellmark was £35470 - in 2021 (last figures available) it was £35 970. £35470 in 2014 adjusted for inflation is equivalent to £47227.25 in 2024. Eurofins (earliest figures available 2018) average staff costs £35166 equivalent to £44165 adjusted for inflation in 2024. Eurofins average staff costs in 2022 (latest figures) £40399. KFS (earliest figures available 2019) average staff costs £29977 equivalent to £36986 adjusted for inflation in 2024. KFS average staff costs in 2022 (latest figures) £32685. None of these private providers publish their salaries on job adverts. All say that they are competitive but that depends on how you define your competition. Listen to what David Hartshorne, MD of Cellmark said to the House of Lords in 2018. Things do not seem to have got any better since 2018 and it's important to remember that FSPs were struggling to maintain staff in a low inflation environment back then. https://lnkd.in/eBbT_Whg None of them appear to be able to even meet the basic need of raising salaries to meet rising inflation since 2018. Arguably, it's not their fault that they can't do that, but that doesn't help their staff or prospective job applicants desperate to start a career in forensic science. It's important for young people to know what potentially lies ahead of them if they join the private FSPs under the current system in which they are forced to operate. This brings me to talk about churn (turnover of staff). Looking at LinkedIn as a means to understand it, there appears plenty of movement between FSPs at junior levels (less than 5 yrs) and in particular a drain from the private FSPs towards the police labs or out of forensic science altogether. Would be interested to hear views on this. We are churning out amazing, brilliant, enthusiastic young people out of uni forensic science courses every year, it's important for them to know the good, bad and the ugly about the profession in the UK so that they can make informed choices.

Why supervision is (important in fieldwork)? In the last post, we talked about why it is important to use community volunteers Truly, working with them is easy, fast and fun but they should be supervised........ You can't expect them to face the challenges alone on the field or make mistakes.....this would jeopardize your implementation When your volunteers are on field, target once or twice in week to monitor and supervise their activities.... Many times you need their pictures, their information, target audience, their number of sensitizations and many more data to write a good report.....so avoid and correct mistakes that could come up...... . . Why do we have "Forensic Science Labs" and various organizations dedicated to forensic science if they don’t provide employment opportunities to Forensic Science graduates? It’s disheartening to see specialized institutions overlook the very graduates trained to excel in this field, prioritizing candidates without a formal forensic background. This not only undermines the quality of forensic investigations but also sidelines passionate, qualified professionals. We need to ensure that forensic labs and organizations prioritize hiring those who have dedicated their studies to mastering forensic science, thereby enhancing the integrity and effectiveness of our justice system. Thoughts on Empowering Forensic Science Graduates: A Call for Change As I near the end of my Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, I'm compelled to share a critical issue: the employment challenges faced by graduates in our field. Despite our specialized training, securing relevant jobs is a significant hurdle. Why This Matters: Forensic Science plays a vital role in solving crimes and delivering justice. Yet, too often, roles in this field are filled by those without the necessary background, compromising the quality of investigations and limiting opportunities for dedicated graduates. The Vision for this Movement: We advocate for employment opportunities in Forensic Science to be reserved for those with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Forensic Science. This will ensure that qualified professionals lead forensic investigations, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of our justice system. Join the Conversation: 1. What can we do to raise awareness? Subject: Inclusion in Forensic Investigation Careers, White Paper Issue #1, 2024 We invite articles by subject matter experts (SME) in the field of forensic science of about 800 - 900 words to be submitted to info@snchronicle.com not later than February 16,2024. We encourage submissions that provide solutions and best practices for increasing diversity in forensic laboratory science. Authors can share success stories, policies, or initiatives that have effectively promoted inclusivity in the field. Research Methodologies: Encourage articles that explore qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. These may include surveys, interviews, case studies, and content analysis to gain insights into the racial and ethnic diversity within forensic laboratory science. Examination of Barriers: Articles should analyze and discuss potential barriers, both overt and subtle, that may hinder the representation of Black and Hispanic individuals in forensic science. This could encompass educational, institutional, and cultural factors. Articles should discuss strategies used to attract and retain underrepresented minorities in forensic science education and careers by programs, agencies, and institutions. Encourage authors to propose specific policy recommendations for professional organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies to improve diversity and inclusion in forensic science. Also, address ethical considerations related to diversity in forensic science, such as the implications for justice and the impact on the public's perception of the field.
