Tomorrow, we will be celebrating a new class of students during MCW-Central Wisconsin’s 2024 White Coat Ceremony! Among the incoming students is Emily Voss. Emily’s unique journey from owning a successful photography studio in Wausau to becoming a medical student is truly inspiring. After years in the art world, Emily decided to pursue her lifelong interest in medicine. She reflects, “I just had this nagging regret that I’d never tested the waters to see if it was something I was interested in.” Emily’s dedication to both her craft and community is evident. Her passion for learning and commitment to helping others make her a wonderful addition to our MCW family. We look forward to seeing her thrive and make a significant impact in the field of medicine. MCW’s Dr. Brandon Tefft has been honored with the prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF)! Dr. Tefft’s CAREER project, titled, “Origami-inspired design for a tissue-engineered heart valve,” leverages origami-inspired design principles to engineer living heart valve replacements from degradable scaffold materials. By incorporating stem cells derived from a patient’s umbilical cord blood, Dr. Tefft aims to create a growing heart valve that offers superior structure and function. Last month, the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment announced an investment of $50 million to accelerate improving health and wellness in #Wisconsin in addition to celebrating their 20th anniversary. Yesterday, the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced an award of $49 million to the Wisconsin BioHealth Tech Hub, an initiative led by BioForward, Inc. transforming #Wisconsin into a national leader in personalized medicine. As a member of the Tech Hub Consortium, MCW is leading one of three technology projects funded by the EDA. The project, CAREScan Mobile Screening, aims to revolutionize the delivery of #Healthcare as a fully mobile platform that improves #HealthEquity through neighborhood-based access to health screening and care. Last month, the MCW Military Resource Group held a #July4th cardmaking event for veterans at the VA Hospital. Many MCW community members stopped by to share their creativity, joy, and thankfulness for our #veterans. By the end of the event, 81 cards were sent to the VA Hospital!
