Yesterday we had our first meeting of the Department of Management Advisory Board. We are thrilled to have made this initial connection with several top executives in the area, and we look forward to getting their input on how to make sure our students are prepared to enter the workforce with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful individually and as part of a team. We learned that the process of forming a board can be very challenging in terms of finding people that have the right qualifications and experience, as well as connections to the Bryan School and within the community. Have you been part of creating an advisory board? What challenges did you face, and what did you find was most successful?

Having a full calendar of back-to-back meetings every day may mean you're busy. But it has nothing to do with being effective. More likely: It means you don't have time to do the real work to improve the lives of your teams and your patients. Never before have we been more distracted and disengaged from our work. The winners of tomorrow are the leaders who ruthlessly prioritize where to apply their time and calendars.

ARE YOU PRIMED TO RAISE THE ANTE THIS NEW YEAR? One of the most poignant lessons I've learnt in this my relatively very short sojourn on this side of creation is the fact that virtually every level of performance can ALWAYS be made better! And this maxim applies to everything and everybody, without fail. Thus - Every organisation (no matter how well it performed in 2023) can be made to perform better this new year! Every business unit or section can still be made to perform better this year! Every team can be led to perform much better in 2024! Every manager, no matter how exalted or how effective he/she was in 2023, can still perform better in 2024! Every subordinate can still perform much better this year! And so on and so forth! This is just the natural way of things. But the main snag here is that about 75% of people will wait for circumstances or someone to push them before they move. About 15% won't even be amenable to any such drive or inspiration. But there is often that 10%, or thereabout, that will make this move by themselves. To them, it comes almost naturally because they've understood the 'natural way of things'. Then arises some pertinent questions - To which group do you belong? To which class does your team, department or business unit belong? To which category does your Organisation belong? Your answer to any of the above questions shouldn't be construed to mean a 'last bus-stop' of sorts for you. Even if you fall within the best-practice 10%, you've still got a lot of work to do in order to keep you on the right pedestal. Let us all therefore see the questions as mere wake-up calls or prodding to get to work right away. And if you are at a loss as to what to do, don't hesitate to ask.
