The latest IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Bellwether report for Q4 2023 shows the highest marketing budget growth since 2014. Even in the face of a difficult economic environment, the results show that businesses understand that sustaining activity throughout tougher times safeguards the long term wellbeing of their brands. Improved measurement will also undoubtedly be contributing to the justification of spends. With the industry outlook for the remainder of the year looking positive, we are particularly interested in how the specific spends per category will alter as the economic situation evolves, with this report showing stronger growth for online and video than some other media categories.

In the marketing bubble on LinkedIn, Cannes is making all the headlines as +15k leading marketers and their agency partners head to Southern France next week for the Cannes Lions Awards 🏆. But I want to pause and reflect on one of last year’s winners— Mastercard. It’s a great learning case that the best way to spend marketing dollars is not necessarily about investing in high-reach campaigns about “doing good.” Instead, it’s about solving systemic ecosystem challenges in a way that fuels your business model. Mastercard partnered with government bodies and the private sector to help refugees affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. They created a platform to help people navigate ‘where to settle’ (e.g., leveraging data from the Statistical Office.) By putting people at the heart of their strategy, Mastercard showed us that when a brand has a strong purpose, it can create change in ways unimaginable.
