At the UN High-level Meeting (#UNHLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) in September, governments will sign a global political declaration committing to respond to AMR.
As a medical humanitarian organisation, we see the impact of AMR every day, especially in many of the low-resource settings in which we operate. Ahead of the UNHLM on AMR, here are our 4 recommendations for the declaration 👇
We call on governments to:
🎯 Prioritise universal access to effective diagnostics and drugs. R&D of new antibiotics must target the most urgent global public health needs and have conditions making them affordable and accessible to all.
🎯 Strengthen infection prevention and control, and invest in health infrastructure to reduce transmission of resistant infections
🎯 Invest in lab infrastructure, training and innovations in low-resource settings to expand access to testing, enable proper diagnosis, and prevent, detect and control AMR more effectively
🎯 Prioritise community and civil society engagement in national AMR plans, governance, and funding decisions at the international level

Insights into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in the management of respiratory diseases in the USA are given in a report from FIP today. A FIP insight board gathered at the FIP congress in September 2023 discussed respiratory infection management post COVID-19, pharmacist-led AMS programmes, diagnostic services, patient and healthcare professional education and the One Health approach in the US context. Unique challenges related to point-of-care testing, collaboration with other healthcare professionals and reimbursement of services, and ideas for fostering collaboration with different sectors are presented in the report. To tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), it's important to know the role that antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) plays and the key components that drive impact. AMS initiatives can help in promoting judicious and targeted utilization of antimicrobials, preserving their efficacy and mitigating the emergence of resistance. Implementing these strategies can optimize patient outcomes by ensuring individuals receive the most suitable therapeutic interventions. Fighting AMR is everyone's concern and is at the heart of our global public health mission.
This article provides a great overview of how a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach can mitigate the consequences of AMR effectively.

MPox cases continue globally with an increase in cases observed in the Western Pacific Region reported in the most recent World Health Organization Situation report published this week.
The need for sufficient supply of effective vaccines to prevent infection and transmission remains and will continue.
The Sementis Copenhagen Vector (SCV) platform, is a 4th generation pox-based vector, specifically designed to be manufactured at speed and scale. The SCV platform will in future provide an additional and alternate vaccine option in the management and suppression of MPox globally.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is providing funding to the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (AMMI Canada) to develop national antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for 25 different syndromes in humans, and to Firstline to disseminate those guidelines to health care providers at the point-of-care. The guidance documents will be made available to Canadian prescribers through a downloadable application via Firstline’s digital platform.
These guidelines will help to optimize prescribing practices and reduce unnecessary or inappropriate use of antimicrobials in humans in Canada, which is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
This is a key step forward under the Pan-Canadian Action Plan on AMR 5-year commitment for concerted action to tackle AMR.
