June 1st marks the official start of Pride month! The first Pride march took place on June 28, 1970, in New York City, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event in the movement for LGBTQIA+ equality. Since then, Pride has become a national celebration of Queer history and culture across the country. Throughout this month you might see stores adorned with rainbows and pride-themed decorations, advertisements promoting equality and allyship, and celebrations of the community - including parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, concerts, and memorial services. At our house, we fly two flags 365 days a year: the American flag and the Pride flag. We proudly display our Pride flag for several reasons. We are proud of our family – of how we live and who we love. We want people to see that they are not alone in our neighborhood and in our community. And we know an increase in representation, visibility, and equality means more LGBTQIA+ Americans can live as our authentic selves. We want everyone to know YOU belong here! My recent experience with a new neighbor reaffirmed the importance of visibility and representation in fostering a culture of belonging. We've lived in our neighborhood for 17 years, among the first families here, but many of the original homeowners have moved out, making way for new families. One evening, while returning from a walk, I stopped to say hello and introduce myself to the neighbor who’d just moved in across the street. “You’re the house with the pride flag” she said with a big smile on her face. “That’s us,” I said with a grin. She shared that when they were deciding where they wanted their family to live, seeing our flag gave them a sense of ease. While it wasn't the reason for their choice, it signaled to them that our neighborhood is a place of belonging. They bought the house and now there are two homes in our neighborhood, directly across the street from one another, flying Pride flags year-round! As we begin to celebrate Pride month, I encourage you to reflect… What does representation look like for you? How are you creating safe spaces and a sense of belonging for ALL? How do you show up for others?
