UPDATE: Per PWU's instagram, pressure from the imminent strike led to a bargaining breakthrough, and the union has halted the strike. Congratulations to the PWU bargaining team and I hope the agreement turns out well! -- The Sierra Club staff in the Progressive Workers Union go on strike tomorrow, to fight unfair labor practices and earn a fair contract. Solidarity means not crossing their picket lines, even online! Thankfully, the PWU has put out a helpful guidance doc (linked below). A couple of highlights: -do not visit the Sierra Club website -do not join meetings with Sierra Club staff -do not respond to emails from the Sierra Club or Sierra Club staff if at all possible -do not engage with Sierra Club social media If this isn't possible for you, PWU asks that you speak out in support of strikers when you engage with the Sierra Club--whether that's in your email, on a video call, or in person. https://lnkd.in/gtzhP6N5

An interesting read from Diane Nicol on minimum service levels during strike action and the new draft statutory Code of Practice on the 'reasonable steps' to be taken by a trade union to comply with the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act 2023. This will be of interest for any businesses who have been or may be facing strike action, and you may wish to respond to the ongoing consultation before it closes on 6 October.

The Finnish central trade union association SAK and the Pro union are organizing a strike on November 7th. Trade unions belonging to the central Finnish trade union association SAK announced on Thursday, November 2, a list of companies (already more than 60 large enterprises and factories) participating in strikes against government policies regarding the labor market and social security. The protests will last 24 hours and begin next Tuesday, November 7. The first protests will take place in Northern Finland. Also, the Pro Trade Union, which is not part of the central association of trade unions SAK, reports that it will organize a 24-hour strike at a number of enterprises and production facilities. The strike concerns work shifts that will begin between November 7, 2023 at 00:00-24:00. Also, the Union of Industrial Workers and the Union of Builders announced on Tuesday, October 31, the start of strikes that will last a maximum of 24 hours. The purpose of the strike is to influence the Finnish government's planned changes to labor laws, which will worsen the working conditions and livelihoods of employees.

"A general strike doesn’t need every participant to have exactly the same contract expiration date. For a May Day 2028 strike, for example, people working under any contract that expired before that date could just keep their contract bargaining going until May Day. Also, anyone who had unionized but was still negotiating a first contract could grab onto May Day as a self-imposed deadline and participate in the strike. So rather than thinking about only unions that could get that exact expiration date as possible participants, think about all the unions whose contracts expire in a six month window preceding that date, along with all the unions negotiating first contracts, along with all the unions willing to say 'fuck it' and strike illegally. That is a much, much larger pool." https://lnkd.in/gzTmAuhz

❗EIS-FELA Strike Dates Reminder Please note, that the strike action is part of National Strike Action across all Colleges in Scotland. EIS members have been asked by their trade union to undertake a programme of discontinuous industrial action consisting of strike action. Strike action is planned for the following days W/c 27th May 2024 and W/c 3rd June 2024. Tuesday 28 May Thursday 30 May Friday 31 May Monday 3 June Tuesday 4 June Wednesday 5 June Friday 7 June As we do not know how many EIS-FELA members will take strike action, students should only attend classes where they have been directly told by their lecturer that the class is still taking place. Otherwise, classes are cancelled. Unless otherwise advised, you will not be required to attend your class on the dates listed and will be recorded as present. The College will remain open for support on the dates listed and all students are encouraged to use this time to carry on with their work via self-study. The nursery will also be open. We know this may be a difficult period of time, and we would encourage students to get in touch with their lecturer or Curriculum Manager with any concerns. Hamburg Port Strike: Employees have brought Germany's two biggest container hubs to a standstill, with workers at a third port set to join them. The union Verdi hopes to put pressure on port operators in collective bargaining over wages. The union has called on workers in Hamburg to stage all-day walkouts on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a fourth round of negotiations. Negotiations for a new collective agreement for the 11,500 German North Sea port employees began in May. The strike in Hamburg started at 6:30 a.m. local time and was set to run for 48 hours. Employees at the commercial ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven joined the walkout on Tuesday afternoon for 24 hours, with Germany's westernmost seaport, Emden, set to come to a standstill for a day on Wednesday. The purpose of warning strikes, which can be staged without a ballot of union members, is to force collective bargaining in deadlocked or unproductive negotiations. ZDS said that discussions so far had been "intense but constructive" and that it did not believe the strikes were warranted. "The right to strike is enshrined in Germany's constitution. However, when exercising the right to strike, moderation and balance should be maintained" "In light of the constructive rounds of negotiations to date and the fair offer presented, the ZDS believes there is currently no reason for warning strikes that would compromise the reliability of German seaports." Warning strikes also took place at ports in June. The latest strikes come ahead of talks on Thursday and Friday of this week in Bremen. From Germany New Agency

We hereby inform you that there has been a strike at the port terminals in Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven since today, June 17th / 5:00 a.m. Due to upcoming collective bargaining negotiations, the ver.di union has called for a strike at short notice. We expect massive disruption to port activities, which will have a significant impact on all container movements. The consequences of this are that the containers cannot be picked up and returned at the affected port terminals. The further effects of the strike cannot currently be foreseen, but will, in all probability, be felt in the next few days. We will have to calculate any costs incurred such as transfers, storage fees, waiting times, etc. according to the display. https://lnkd.in/e8cH46Mb

A great précis by Jo Francis summarising the pressure growing in the paper manufacturing sector in Finland. As per my post earlier in the week anyone relying on this supply chain should factor in for additional disruption over the coming short to mid term. The firm stance being taken across the sector by both sides is unprecedented and we will all have to track progress on the key issues and actions taken by both the unions and employers. The Finnish government legislative changes will no doubt be a key element affecting this and the speed of their progress will no doubt compound the situation further. The additional factor of collective agreements being terminated by the main industry unions will be a concern to all who recall the impact of those negotiations two years ago and the chaos and price increases they had across the market due to constrained supply. #paperindustry #packaging #print #strike #finland #labels #cartons

Is your organization prepared? Even if you haven’t got a plan, start talking about contengincies immediately. If the UAW holds to their plan, the impact could be gradual. Your organization still has time.
The UAW unveiled its "Stand Up Strike" strategy to target all of the Big 3 at once. If a contract is not signed, they will strike at SOME of the plants, with plans to add more plants to the strike depending on bargaining progress. An all-out strike is not ruled out. Given this newer flexible strategy and the remaining wide gap between demands and offers a strike is extremely likely. The UAW will not be bargaining on the 15th. Details on the state of the negotiations are in the short report below. There has been no movement around increasing retiree payments disclosed to date. Seraph.
