Dissertations and theses are perhaps the most important works academics produce in their careers. They demonstrate the author’s mastery of their chosen field and separate the students from the scholars. As such, the language of such work must be flawless to ensure it is properly understood and coherent. Reflection: Academic Writing Skills In Lecture Week 6: Academic Writing Skills, the lecture's main topic is regarding plagiarismm and how it affects academic writing skills. In university, academic writing skills are important as they are needed to produce quality academic papers, such as a lab report, an essay or a thesis. Students will refer to other works to collect information. However, with the availability of Internet, it makes it much easier for people to copy and share information without giving due credit or finding out relevant data regarding the original author. It also leads to accidental plagiarism cases when a student does not know how to cite and paraphrase correctly. Moreover, students have become more reliant on AI to write essays, which, most of the time, do not include the original sources it had cited from. Besides that, by using AI such as ChatGPT to produce ideas, it will lead to a future of generations that lack originality and creativity. During the class, the lecturer had assigned us a simple assignment whereby we let ChatGPT to write an essay regarding plagiarism. Then, the essay will be submitted in a plagiarism checker, Turnitin. The software checks for potentiallly unoriginal content by comparing a student's submission to other writings or published works. I had gotten an 12% similarity for my essay.

H/t to Angelica E. Bega for this article. I cannot emphasize enough how important my English Literature undergraduate degree was in building the foundations for my textual analysis skill--a skill I use every day in translating stakeholder requests into technical requirements in user stories. The English Literature degree requires you to read thousands of pages throughout the four years of your studies and to then write papers through the lenses of various types of critical theories applied to those pages you've read. It might be a historical or biographical or (god help you) phenomenological lens, and you have to explain what you've read in that particular critical context. Never say the humanities degrees are worthless. They provide knowledge and skills that can be universally applied in the business world. #humanities #degrees #englishliterature #writing #textualanalysis #analysis

What would it mean to view academic writing as a transmission of energy? Joost Vervoort writes about engaging with the energy of papers. "Though it’s true that academic writing can be very dry, there is no reason that academic articles can’t crackle with inspiration and energy." But what would this look like? "It’s a form of imaginal practice. You listen to it with your body. You notice what imagery comes up, and how this imagery resonates with what you are feeling energetically in your body." Joost explains this is important in a world in crisis - to break with the academic culture of publish or perish. "As researchers, especially in fields related to social change, we should be thinking about how our writing energizes our peers, our students, and society." This also invites reflection on journal paywalls as obstacles to energy flows from academia to the rest of society, the fact that ChatGPT doesn't have a body to write energetically from, and whether an academic paper is even the right format for what someone is trying to communicate. Reflection on Academic Writing Task On December 13, 2023, our PPD lecturer, Dr. Norlina, gave us a speech regarding plagiarism based on a slide presentation in class. According to the slide presentation, plagiarism is the act of copying someone else's work or idea, which is considered unethical and cheating. However, plagiarism is highly widespread among all students, since it is already present in modern artificial intelligence. Many students who utilize AI websites to assist with their assignments are plagiarizing. Following a quick overview of plagiarism, I became aware of the negative implications of directly copying someone else's concept without citation, particularly for students who utilize AI websites, which are more likely to be noticed by professors. After the speech, Dr. Norlina requested us to take the Academic Writing Quiz to improve our awareness of plagiarism. I answered ten out of twelve questions correctly. After the quiz, she instructed us to do the Academic Writing Task, which would expose us to the Turnitin plagiarism detector. I completed the task on December 18th, despite the fact that writing is difficult for me due to my lack of IT skills. I was stuck on the TOC and how to title each picture and table provided because the instructions did not clearly demonstrate how. To overcome the problem, I sought a close friend for assistance, and she was able to teach me. As a result, this work helped me develop my ICT skills. After submitting, I received 95% plagiarism on the essay project. Overall, I finally understand how Turnitin works, and it is extremely risky for students to engage in plagiarism without citation because the repercussions of being found are severe.
