A review published in the open access journal Applied Sciences MDPI runs through the research on Japanese matcha green tea. The review, cited in The Huffington Post, provides an overview of matcha green tea and its numerous health benefits. This includes the antioxidant activity of matcha tea, which protects cells and tissues from damage. The review brings awareness to the research conducted on both green tea and matcha tea, and how more research on matcha tea needs to be done to understand the extent of its health benefits. All articles in Beverages MDPI (ISSN 2306-5710) Vol 10, Issue 1, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wKGFW COVER STORY: Health-related nutritional human studies rely on the validity of dietary data provided by study participants. Researchers from the Technical University of Munich investigated biomarkers for food intake to help objectify data collected by food frequency questionnaires. They facilitate the monitoring of compliance with the study requirements, e.g., abstinence from food, help clean biased data, and remove non-compliant individuals. Biomarker candidates are often revealed by sophisticated metabolomics analyses of body fluids, e.g., urine or plasma, collected from case and control study populations. However, validation for using a biomarker candidate in real-life scenarios is seldomly executed. Coffee is a food item of high interest because of the abundance of bioactive compounds and the regularity of life-time consumption by a large part of the population. Food-waste in Japan is a big issue. A paper published in the open access journal Recycling MDPI looks at Japan’s Food and Waste Recycling Law and the current government policy on food wastage. The researchers also explore how these legislations fulfil the sustainable development goal (SDG) target 12.3, a goal that calls for a reduction in food waste. The article, cited in BBC News, explores the history and intricacies of the food waste policy in Japan, and how future government regulations and strategies can be implemented to ensure that the SDGs are being achieved. Researchers from Princeton University, Rutgers University and Cornell University investigate biodiversity loss in the ocean by uncovering market stalls in New York City that sell endangered sea cucumber species. The study, published in the open access journal Sustainability MDPI uses genetic testing to identify the endangered sea cucumbers in New York food markets. The results from this study demonstrate that there is an abundance of endangered sea cucumbers currently on the market. The researchers conclude that genetic markers need to be developed to tackle this so that the geographical origins of the sea cucumbers can be traced. Additionally, they noted that more awareness and responsibility are needed by market holders in regards to protecting certain species.
