Why are female CEOs stepping down? Two weeks ago, Helena Helmersson, CEO of H&M stepped down, saying: "I don't have the energy to continue." She follows several other high profile female leaders who've stepped down in the last few years – among them Sharon White of John Lewis, Susan Wojcicki of YouTube and Jacinda Ardern, ex-PM of New Zealand. They’ve been refreshingly honest about their reasons for leaving – burn out and the desire to live a more balanced life where they can prioritise their health and family are the main ones. Much press coverage has focused on their lack of ‘stamina’. It’s failed to highlight the extra burdens female leaders take on at work and at home that make them more prone to burnout. Women are 60% more likely than men to take on the emotional load of their colleagues (McKinsey, Jan 2022). They’re also, on average, doing 60% more of the unpaid work in the home (ONS, 2016). But these resignations point to a deeper problem – according to The Wall Street Journal, more than 1,900 CEOs left their jobs last year, and a record 19 died in office. A recent Deloitte study found that 82% of CEOs have experienced exhaustion and 96% feel their mental health has declined. It might be what sets these women apart is not their lack of stamina, it’s the bravery to speak up about the toll these positions take and the wisdom to prioritise what matters most. In this era of soaring burnout, disengagement and ‘quiet quitting’ we need to have a much bigger conversation about the demands placed on senior leaders and think about ways to re-design their roles so they're compatible with a healthy, sustainable way of life. If we really want diverse leadership teams that can perform at their best in the long-term, we need to change how we lead not just who is leading. Watch this space for new offerings for senior women leaders that challenge unhealthy paradigms and enable them to live their full potential. #womensleadership #burnout #challengethestatusquo Sarah Devereaux Elisa Dari Holly Sommers Tskenya-Sarah Frazer

Insightful reflections about women in senior leadership roles and how the current system may be better at getting more women in senior positions but definitely is not set up to keep them there. So how do we nurture a new paradigm for our organisations? This question (and many more) is what I’m exploring in a new collaboration with Odharnait Ansbro. Stay tuned to know more about what emerges from that! #womenleaders #newparadigm #challengethestatusquo
