Mark Cavage’s Post

For years I've remarked to friends, family, and more that the most important work of our time is, and will be, centered in health care and climate. And further, the two are interconnected. I've long felt an anxiety that I've not been doing anything about it, but didn't know how to take action on it. Until now. I could not be more excited to be working with Jini Kim, David Chen, John Doerr, and the whole team at Nuna Inc.. The mission of the company, to make high-quality healthcare affordable and accessible for everyone, is virtuous, genuine, and helping provide healthcare to a significant and increasing number of American lives every day. After having met Jini, I knew this is where I belong, and the most important work I can be doing. She and David have already built an amazing company, but true to form, they've been incredibly generous and gracious to bring me on as not just CTO, but as a cofounder to the company. While the company has already been started, we're treating today as a new first day, and view Nuna as a "speed up." We're building a company to last a generation, but more importantly we're hoping to solve one of the two biggest problems of our generation. And of course we're hiring, so if you're interested in solving this crisis with us, please reach out!

Spot on. To bring this to a pragmatic place: 40% of physicians will retire in the next few years. Our population is living longer and our birth rate is declining. This means that the growth rate in demand for healthcare services will outpace the growth rate in the number of healthcare professionals. Burnout is already a challenge at current levels among healthcare professionals - exacerbating dynamics as I outlined above will make this more acute. This will ultimately create a negative reinforcing feedback loop. Meaningful work in value-based care must look at AI as a means of increasing the aggregate capacity of the healthcare system to provide care in this context. There are other industries that have to play their part as much of our healthcare demand today is from chronic conditions that arise out of lifestyle - but changing lifestyles at scale is akin to changing culture at scale which is a slow, iterative process that is definitionally bottom-up to be sustainable. For organizations serious about driving the effective, impactful use of AI in healthcare, we're here to help.

What great news for you, for Nuna, and for the rest of us! This just made my day Mark: I can’t wait to see what you’ll do <3

Mark, it's fantastic to hear that you've putting your incredible intellect and leadership to health tech! I also agree that the connections between health care and climate will, unfortunately, come into sharp focus in the near future. If I was not having an incredible experience in cyber security, I'd likely return to health tech. Go Nuna!
