When the President and his wife invite you to the White House for a Juneteenth concert featuring the likes of Pattie Labelle, Gladys Knight, Kirk Franklin, and Anthony Hamilton, you don’t ask questions — you just RSVP and then figure out what kicks you’re going to wear. Many thanks to the Bidens for hosting an incredible evening of fellowship and celebration, mixed with powerful reminders of why we celebrate Juneteenth, and how we have to continue fighting to preserve the progress that those who came before before us sacrificed so dearly for. As we stood on that White House lawn Monday night, we were standing on the backs of people like Claudette Colvin, Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, Diane Nash and Fannie Lou Hamer, people who dedicated their lives to creating a better, more equitable society for future generations in the face of overwhelming, vehement, and often violent opposition. We were standing on the backs of people like Medgar Evers, James Chaney and Fred Hampton, people who paid with their lives to create a better world for their kids and grandkids — a world they would never get to see. If you don’t know those names, go read up on them. As bigotry becomes increasingly acceptable in mainstream society and programs like DEI are being systematically dismantled around us, I can’t help but think of the famous quote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” But in the midst of all those challenges, sometimes the ultimate act of resilience is simply allowing yourself a brief moment of unburdened joy in the company of those who share your struggles and understand your journey. From connecting with old friends (shoutout to my fellow black founders Chisa Egbelu and Anthony Brown — the marathon continues!), to making new ones (what up ArRone K. Washington, Lark Y. Grier-Hapli, Karim Marshall, Sherice Perry, Michael Blake, and all of the other dope people I met), it was an evening I won’t soon forget.
