Last week we hosted the final of the Count on Us Secondary Maths Challenge. Taking place at City Hall, 13 schools battled it out to take home the 2024 title. Count On Us is our exciting pan-London programme for secondary schools that engages students in Years 7 to 9 with maths games designed to challenge and inspire. Competing over four rounds, which included algebra, geometry, mental arithmetic and many other branches of maths, the schools were required to use their teamwork, initiative, and quick thinking. Camden School for Girls, who had impressed throughout the competition, were crowned 2024 champions and worthy winners. The final was a celebration of not just this year's programme, which saw 67 schools from across London compete, but a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the programme. The Count on Us Maths Challenge is supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation and delivered in partnership with Chris Olley from the Maths Zone. With the sad news of Sir Jack Petchey's passing coming shortly after the final, we hope the day would have made Sir Jack very proud. Speaking to students at the final was Charlie, a Mayor's Fund for London Youth Board member and previous Count on Us participant. Showing first-hand how the programme builds confidence and inspires participation in Maths, Charlie said: “It boosted my confidence, and it made maths seem fun. Empathy and respect for what others have to say are skills that we used... and are skills I still use today as a tutor. In the future, I want to be a teacher or data analyst, which both use maths.” Also speaking at the final was MFL ambassador, Simon Singh MBE, who provided students with some additional maths problems to solve. MFL Trustee, Roni Savage, spoke to students about how maths is used in everyday life and how it contributes to her work as an engineer and to her son playing video games. Giving closing speeches were MFL Chief Executive Jim Minton and Jack Petchey Foundation Director of Programmes Vicky Mirfin. Jim summed up the event by congratulating all the teams and stating: “I’m confident everyone in this room has a really great future ahead”. Numeracy is a big part of what we do to ensure young Londoners feel comfortable and empowered with useful skills for the world of work. 🌟 There is a school in the UK that sends 1 out of 3 students to Oxford or Cambridge. You think it is Eton or another school for rich kids of famous people? Nah. It is a state school. 🌟 King’s Maths School is a state (public) sixth form college in London, which topped this year’s A-level rankings: 69 per cent of A-levels taken by its students were A*, and 92 per cent were A or A*. The school was founded in 2014 by King’s College London, and caters for the mathematically gifted. Each year has about 70 students. 🌟 Recipe for success? That's surely a part of it: The school is highly selective - only 1 out of 10 students get in - although parents of 1 in 4 parents have no history of higher education. The school uses PhDs at King’s College as mentors for the students. It also provides professional development for maths and physics teachers in other schools. It’s #NationalNumeracyDay 🎉✖️ ➕➖ ➗🎉 We’re celebrating the role our programmes play in improving confidence when it comes to maths. Numeracy is a big part of what we do to ensure young Londoners are empowered with skills to help them thrive in future employment. Through Numbers @ Work, our new two-year year innovative pilot, we are supporting businesses to connect with young people at risk of exclusion to improve numeracy and maths confidence. Work-based sessions have been taking place in a range of workplaces, working with students in Years 9-11 (age 13-16) in PRUs, SEN Schools, plus those at risk of exclusion from mainstream schools. Our goal is to assess whether supported interactions with businesses and volunteers can improve students’ attitudes towards maths. Through positive role models, workshops, and industry insights, these opportunities build the skills and networks that springboard our young Londoners to explore careers they thought were unattainable, propelled by a sense of belonging and ambition that helps them thrive. Find out more about Numbers @ Work https://bit.ly/3QY8PL3 Our Count on Us Secondary Maths Challenge is heading towards the final of the competition, which will be taking place at City Hall in June. Count on Us is an exciting pan-London programme for secondary schools, which engages students in Years 7 to 9 with maths games designed to challenge and inspire. The programme is part of what we do to ensure young Londoners are provided with confidence in skills such as numeracy, providing them with a springboard to access future opportunities. In 2022/23, over 7,500 students that took part in the Count on Us Secondary Challenge, with 80% of teachers stating that the programme has positively impacted students’ attitudes towards maths. The programme is supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation and delivered in partnership with Chris Olley from the Maths Zone. Maths Courses (many free!) for Ages 7-18 taken by 30,000 students for Maths Challenges and Olympiads, 11+ Maths, GCSE, A-Level and more.
Preparing for the 11+ exams can be a stressful experience for students and parents alike and good quality advice and expert private tuition can cost families many thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands pounds. Worst of all, students can end up so worried about doing well on the exams that they stop finding maths the fun subject it used to be for them. But I've made a course that solves these problems - it will save parents a huge amount on private tuition, prepare children thoroughly for any 11+ maths exam, and also keeps the fun of puzzles and problem-solving in the subject. So actually all students aged 9-11 can benefit whether or not they’re taking the 11+ exam. But to make the course, I didn’t just draw on my own experience - I meticulously worked through a large number of 11+ papers, from ISEB tests and entrance papers for the leading grammar and independent schools, studying the topics that come up most often and organising them into topic areas and difficulty. Then, informed by all that research and experience I set about writing more than 1000 of my own questions that I’ve arranged into 30 chapters, each with introductory teaching videos and quizzes. Actually, I’ve been writing them for years, testing them out on my private tuition students to make sure they’re at the right level. The students I’ve tested these on have been successful in getting places at all of London’s leading independent schools including St Paul’s Boys and Girls Schools, City of London Boys and Girls, Kings Wimbledon, Westminster School, Dulwich College, JAGS and Alleys and many more and the first students who have taken this online course have started telling me of similar successes too. I’m really confident that students will finish the course not just ready for 11+ maths exams but with more enthusiasm for and confidence in mathematics. Because it also focuses on a lot of fun an challenging problems, it’s also really helpful for any students of this age who want to get better at maths or prepare for maths challenges and competitions too. So don’t let the stress of preparing for 11+ maths stop maths being your child’s favourite subject. The first sections of each level are totally free of charge so there’s really nothing to lose - you can sign up for free here and get started when you’re ready: https://lnkd.in/e4pEmVB2

👩🏻🏫 CEO of Davis School Education: International Online Learning | ✍️ Freelance Curriculum Writer & Educational Materials Creator
An interesting read summarising Ofsted’s recent report. It's heartening to see the report acknowledge the importance of prioritising quality over external assessments, ultimately nurturing a genuine love for Maths. As a dedicated Maths educator, I completely agree that a foundation of comprehensive Maths education is much more important than exams! My sincere appreciation to the NCETM and the Maths Hubs for their commitment to enhancing Maths education, as always. If only everyone could love Maths as much as we do. Hopefully if we continue elevating Maths education standards and inspiring a lifelong affection for this subject, it will finally happen! #MathsEducation #OfstedReport #TeachingMaths #EducationMatters #Maths #MathsTutor
Ofsted's 'Coordinating mathematical success' report is a worthwhile and interesting read. In my latest NCETM Director's blog post https://lnkd.in/e6j8zPJr I reflect on the findings of the report and how we might use them to inform how to support schools to address the challenges they face in providing effective maths education that will prepare their pupils for the next stage of their education, for work and for life.
Reflections on the Ofsted maths subject report
