I love Halloween. I think it's my favourite holiday. Why, you might ask? It's the only modern holiday where the quality of your community matters more than the quality of your close relations. It's the day when children bring joy to elderly neighbours, when we get to see other people out on the street in a meaningful way, and where the casual hellos fostered by a "trick-or-treat" strengthen our ties. But Halloween also exposes just how much we've prioritized the movement of people in cars over the safety of children. Every year, Halloween brings the highest number of pedestrian fatalities that are children in a single day. (https://lnkd.in/gJsCQ55h) It's not enough to ask people to slow down or require kids to have reflective costumes - it's time to start taking steps to give some of the public space that cars have taken away from our kids back to them, even if only for one night (as a start). Every residential street should be closed to through traffic on Halloween. Normalize the Trick or Streets movement (https://lnkd.in/ghK7FUr8) and let's start taking some steps that show how our streets can do more than just move cars. #ChildFriendly #Transportation #VisionZero

SNAP does not allow someone to pay for all their food. It’s called Supplemental for a reason. But if someone does not have the resources beyond the maximum SNAP benefits, where does that food come from? Food banks, WIC, and for a small percentage of people, gardens. If you know anything about food banks, you must know how under resourced and on the brink of collapse they often are- my local food bank is run by a woman in her 70s. It’s no wonder we have an obesity and inflammation epidemic when people are provided food to meet or approach caloric needs but many macro and micro nutrients are in short supply (Farm Bill subsidies anyone?). We really need an overhaul of our food system and agricultural priorities.
On average, 41.2 million Americans received monthly SNAP benefits in 2022. If you have not used SNAP before, this virtual experience from MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger allows you to get a sense of ordering food using a limited budget. https://lnkd.in/e82RgZHC

In a world where time flies, and priorities shift, remember the profound truth underpinning thriving communities: caring. Anthony J. D'Angelo said it best, "Without a sense of CARING, there would be no COMMUNITY." At Right at Home, we cherish this truth. Caring isn't just a feeling; it's a force that enriches lives and forges connections. It's the backbone of compassion that echoes through our streets. When we care for each other, we ignite a ripple effect of kindness. Every vibrant community thrives on genuine concern for each other's well-being. Whether it's a friendly check-in or rallying behind local causes, these acts of care weave the tapestry of togetherness. In our work at Right at Home Milwaukee South, we witness the power of caring firsthand. From assisting with daily tasks to offering companionship, our caregivers embody this spirit. But caring doesn't stop there – it extends to our entire community. Caring isn't just a virtue; it's the cornerstone of community. It binds us and empowers us to build a better world together. Join us in nurturing a culture of caring, kindness, and empathy. Together, we create communities where everyone thrives. 💙 #CaringCommunity #CommunityMatters #RightAtHome #KindnessMatters
