🛑 Most e-commerce/retail businesses are falling short of privacy compliance—ignoring consent enforcement. Businesses focus solely on cookie consent and miss out on consent enforcement (or consent orchestration). —-------------- Hey, ecommerce brands: if you think data privacy = cookie banners, you’re missing out on CX gains and revenue efficiency. Forget about the surface-level cookie banners. There’s a way to get real business impact from your data privacy strategy. ❓What are brands getting wrong? 🚫 Wasting ad revenue on opted-out consumers When brands fail to prioritize consent orchestration–connecting visitor consent signals to marketing techstack systems and apps–they risk wasting media spend on users that haven’t consented, and will never buy. 💡Checking the box on cookie consent…and that’s it Most ecommerce teams are slapping a cookie banner on their website and calling it a day, when instead they could be creating a consumer-centric consent journey, tying consent to first-party data collection and value customers. 🤷♂️Why should you care? Getting data privacy wrong has major negative impacts: more unsubscribes, slower websites, and wasted ad revenue. Get it right, and data privacy can be a true lever for increasing your access to permissioned data for biz growth. The good news? This isn’t as hard as it sounds. It just requires the right cross-functional team and the right techstack. Ketch is the best privacy software for retail and ecommerce brands that need an easy, modern solution to satisfying privacy requirements with a customer-centric approach to data collection and growth. Understanding Cookie Policies: A Key to Online Transparency🧐😶🌫️ Cookie policies are like backstage passes to the online world, providing users with insights into how their data is collected, stored, and utilized. But let's step away from the digital realm for a moment and imagine a different scenario that highlights the importance of these policies. Picture yourself strolling through a bustling farmer's market, surrounded by vendors offering an array of delectable treats. You're drawn to a booth displaying beautifully crafted jars of preserves. Intrigued, you strike up a conversation with the vendor, who eagerly explains the ingredients and production process behind each jar. Any shopaholic out there😆? In this scenario, the vendor's transparency instills confidence and trust in their products. Similarly, a well-crafted cookie policy serves as a virtual storefront, openly disclosing the "ingredients" (or cookies) used on a website and how they enhance the user experience. Why Cookie Policies Matter👀 Just as you appreciate knowing the contents of a jar of preserves, online users value transparency regarding their data. Cookie policies empower users by providing clear, concise information about the cookies deployed on a website, their purposes, and how users can manage their preferences. In a landscape governed by stringent data protection laws, such as the GDPR and CPRA, cookie policies are not merely optional; they're essential for compliance and fostering trust with users. Crafting an Effective Cookie Policy🤓 Crafting a cookie policy isn't just about legal compliance; it's about building trust and enhancing user experience. A robust policy should outline the types of cookies used, their functions, and provide users with options for managing their preferences. Regular updates to the policy ensure alignment with evolving privacy regulations and changes to the website's cookie usage. Just as the vendor at the farmer's market adjusts their offerings based on seasonal ingredients, businesses must adapt their cookie policies to reflect current practices. Final Thoughts🤔 Much like the transparency offered by the vendor at the farmer's market, cookie policies play a pivotal role in establishing trust and accountability in the online ecosystem. By prioritizing transparency and user empowerment, businesses can navigate the complexities of data privacy with confidence. Ready to enhance your online transparency and compliance efforts? Let's ensure your cookie policy is as clear and enticing as those jars of preserves at the farmer's market. Cookie policies & legal considerations for marketplaces 💻⚖️ Marketplaces operate in a complex digital ecosystem, and cookies play a vital role in user experience and targeted advertising. 🔎 Cookie audit Identify the types of cookies your marketplace uses (required, functional, advertising) and the reasons behind them 🔎 Third-party cookies If third-party cookies are used (e.g. social media logins, analytics, advertising), disclose this explicitly in your policy. 👉 You can reference the specific circumstances of their usage, following examples like Nextdoor's Advertising and Cookie Policy 🔎Transparency & user control disclosure Your Cookie Policy should provide a user-friendly breakdown of cookie types, their purposes, and the data collected. 👉Consider Mercari's approach, where clicking on the "Cookie Preferences" link reveals detailed information 🔎 Opting-out mechanisms Inform users on how to manage cookie settings. This empowers them to control their privacy. 👉 Vinted's Cookie Policy serves as a good example by outlining steps for accepting, declining, and deactivating cookies 📍Accessibility Ensure your Cookie Policy is easily accessible, typically through a link in your website footer 📍Recordable consent Obtain clear, recordable user consent for cookie usage. This can be achieved through methods like an "I Agree" checkbox. 📍Compliance with regulations Data privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA require user consent for non-essential cookies. 💡A well-crafted cookie policy fosters trust with your marketplace users. It demonstrates your commitment to data privacy, so contact me to be more empowered! Stay tuned! #marketplaces #cookiepolicy #dataprivacy #userconsent #legal

Server-side tracking is crucial for e-commerce platforms for several reasons. Here are five key importance of server-side tracking in e-commerce: 1. **Data Accuracy and Reliability:** Server-side tracking ensures more accurate and reliable data collection. By processing tracking events on the server, it reduces the chances of data discrepancies and inaccuracies that can occur when relying solely on client-side tracking. This is particularly important in e-commerce where precise data is vital for decision-making, such as understanding customer behavior, optimizing marketing strategies, and improving user experience. 2. **Improved Security:** Server-side tracking enhances data security by reducing the risk of client-side manipulation. Client-side tracking relies on scripts running in the user's browser, which can be susceptible to ad blockers, browser settings, or malicious activities. By handling tracking on the server, it's more challenging for users to manipulate or block the tracking data, ensuring the integrity and security of the collected information. 3. **Cross-Device and Cross-Browser Consistency:** Server-side tracking helps in achieving consistent tracking across various devices and browsers. With client-side tracking, variations in browser settings, ad blockers, or device capabilities can lead to inconsistent data. Server-side tracking mitigates these issues, providing a more uniform and reliable tracking experience regardless of the user's device or browser. 4. **Scalability and Performance:** E-commerce websites often deal with a large volume of traffic and transactions. Server-side tracking can be more scalable, as the server infrastructure can handle the load more efficiently than relying solely on the user's browser. This ensures that tracking does not negatively impact the website's performance, providing a smoother and faster user experience. 5. **Compliance with Privacy Regulations:** Server-side tracking can facilitate compliance with privacy regulations, such as GDPR or CCPA. By processing tracking events on the server, businesses can have better control over the data collection process, ensuring that they adhere to privacy policies and regulations. This helps in building trust with users and avoids potential legal issues related to data privacy. In summary, server-side tracking is crucial for e-commerce platforms to ensure accurate data, improve security, achieve cross-device consistency, handle scalability, and comply with privacy regulations. It contributes to a more reliable, secure, and efficient tracking system, ultimately leading to better-informed decision-making and improved user experiences.

Helping Irish customers with their digital transformation | GRB Account Executive | Salesforce Ireland (Ex Nike)
An excellent report regarding Web Health among Irish retailers produced by .IE in conjunction with Retail Excellence Ireland was released last week. The key findings from the report are of great interest: 1. 6 in 10 retail businesses use website analytic tools, which have significant importance on critical business decision-making. At Salesforce Ireland we are seeing many of our customers utilising Tableau to structure and utilise their data. 2. UX adoption of Live Chat is at 14%, This is significantly lower than I anticipated particularly with Gen Z wanting to self-serve and will only interact with a human if it's the last resort. At Salesforce Ireland a wide range of our customers utilise digital engagement which allows you to offer a consistent customer experience across multiple channels at the same time. 3. Marketing, adoption of online advertising tracking technology is low at 20%, and use of video is low at 16%. Retailers are encouraged to consider quick wins by installing SEO & Social Media plugins. At Salesforce Ireland we have seen customers utilise Advertising Studio to integrate your digital advertising with your marketing and CRM data to build personalised customer experiences. 4. E-Commerce, 46% of retailers have cart functionality, but retailers need to be cognisant of the different shopping preferences of consumers and meet their needs, especially those younger digital natives. At Salesforce Ireland, we are supporting customers with their e-commerce journey by partnering with them to ensure a world-class end-to-end CX experience with Commerce Cloud. (B2C & B2B). Overall many Irish retailers are making progress and driving their e-commerce, social & marketing components of their business. I would encourage any Irish retailer who is considering a digital transformation, upgrading or seeking trusted advice to reach out to the SME retail team at Salesforce Ireland.
