You sometimes have to let others do the work for you - story time!
The world is becoming increasingly distributed, and colleagues will meet more frequently for offsites. This has been my thesis since starting Townish. But not everyone agrees. A good friend of mine didn't.
Every time we met over the last year, he told me that everyone will return to offices. He still thought offsites were fun but didn’t think of them as more than an anecdote because everyone will be back together, all the time.
I met him last week, and something changed. Everything I envisioned happened in his company.
First, he started hiring offshore employees. They’re not in the office with him; they’re in Latin America, doing phenomenal work.
Second, he’s reducing his office footprint to cut costs.
And third, he’s planning an offsite with his global team. And he finally understood what we’re doing 🙂
Will it happen to every CEO? Probably not. But many will understand it’s a win-win for both employers and employees.
Employers will be able to save costs, increase employee retention, and hire from a more global talent pool, while employees will have more time to spend with their families and less time spent commuting and in unproductive office hours.
Team gatherings have been and will continue to be the best way to build company culture, bridge cultural differences between employees, increase employee motivation, and work on more strategic, creative, and high-level tasks that require in-person collaboration.
