Rare diseases affect over 300 million people worldwide and are gaining recognition as a global health priority. Their inclusion in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Resolution on Addressing the Challenges of Persons Living with a Rare Disease, and the anticipated WHO Global Network for Rare Diseases and WHO Resolution on Rare Diseases, which is yet to be announced, emphasise their significance.

TIME: Long COVID Recovery Remains Rare - By Jamie Ducharme Since August 2020, David Putrino, director of rehabilitation innovation at New York’s Mount Sinai Health System, has helped treat more than 3,000 people with Long COVID. These patients, in his experience, fit into one of three groups. A small number, no more than 10%, have stubborn symptoms that don’t get better, no matter what Putrino and his team try. A big chunk see some improvement, but remain sick. And about 15% to 20% report full recovery – an elusive benchmark that Putrino greets with cautious optimism https://lnkd.in/e99BJeKZ #pwME #MECFS #MyalgicE #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #LongCovid #PostCovid #recovery

In the quest to improve kidney health, sustainability of dialysis is rising on the agenda. Haemodialysis uses hundreds of litres of water per session, consuming an estimated 265 billion liters of water annually. Meanwhile, dialysis also produces >900,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year, making it one of the highest emitters of carbon emissions in health care. As we confront global issues like water scarcity and climate change, it's imperative to prioritize more sustainable solutions.

Super somber reading. "Chronic kidney disease and the global public health agenda: an international consensus" article just has been published in Nature Reviews Nephrology https://lnkd.in/eV_NBxrh It's beyond belief that despite every single expert in the medical field and patient societies, screaming about urgent need to do something about CKD/AKI, budgets spent on ESKD (dialysis), technologies available for easy disease detection, effective therapies available...very little (I would say nothing) is done at health care system level to address this issue. I am repeating myself - at the height of COVID pandemic ~3 million people/year died from COVID (lot of them kidney disease patients!), while kidney disease claims 3+ million lives every year, and number is getting bigger year after year, with very bleak prognosis for the future. Now compare what has been done at health care system/societal level about COVID to what attention/action kidney disease gets. WHO, ministries of health... anyone out there?

This statistic may surprise you: Oral diseases affect 1 billion more people than other major diseases combined. It's crucial to understand that oral disease affects individuals directly and significantly increases their vulnerability to other diseases, including diabetes, stroke, and respiratory conditions. Charlotte Edmond makes a great point: "By treating dental care as a separate issue from rest-of-body care – often in entirely different locations—the connection between oral health and health more broadly is often underappreciated." It's time to shift our perspective. Rather than viewing dental care and healthcare as separate entities, we should recognize and prioritize oral health as an integral part of overall healthcare. If we want to improve oral health overall, we must improve oral health literacy and overall education. What should we do to improve oral health in the U.S.? #OralHealth #ChronicDisease #OralHealthcare #PreventativeCare
