TIME: Long COVID Recovery Remains Rare - By Jamie Ducharme Since August 2020, David Putrino, director of rehabilitation innovation at New York’s Mount Sinai Health System, has helped treat more than 3,000 people with Long COVID. These patients, in his experience, fit into one of three groups. A small number, no more than 10%, have stubborn symptoms that don’t get better, no matter what Putrino and his team try. A big chunk see some improvement, but remain sick. In the quest to improve kidney health, sustainability of dialysis is rising on the agenda. Haemodialysis uses hundreds of litres of water per session, consuming an estimated 265 billion liters of water annually. Meanwhile, dialysis also produces >900,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year, making it one of the highest emitters of carbon emissions in health care. As we confront global issues like water scarcity and climate change, it's imperative to prioritize more sustainable solutions.

This statistic may surprise you: Oral diseases affect 1 billion more people than other major diseases combined. It's crucial to understand that oral disease affects individuals directly and significantly increases their vulnerability to other diseases, including diabetes, stroke, and respiratory conditions. Charlotte Edmond makes a great point: "By treating dental care as a separate issue from rest-of-body care – often in entirely different locations—the connection between oral health and health more broadly is often underappreciated." It's time to shift our perspective. Rather than viewing dental care and healthcare as separate entities, we should recognize and prioritize oral health as an integral part of overall healthcare. If we want to improve oral health overall, we must improve oral health literacy and overall education.
