Day 5 / 5 of the sprint. And here it is! As a student I would advise spending the time you need on 1 fantastic portfolio piece, but as you get into work; it can be beneficial to practice compressing what you do to the clock. A 5 day work week is a good timescale for an employer to get an idea of what you can produce for them in roughly what time. Going from student to professional involves delivering to pressured timelines, and being able to communicate to the team around you what you will have done by a specific time. This means absolutely nothing to anybody. These are my original jump wings awarded at graduation of Airbone school. It’s definitely a “nobody cares” kind of achievement… I get that. But 14 years ago this month it was the biggest achievement of my life. It was the type of opportunity that would only come around once, and you either seize the moment or watch that dream fade into the abyss. Not to mention, it’s the kind of school that drops you QUICK for the smallest of reasons. Hesitation on your first jump? Dropped. You get the point. You really only get one chance (unless your in an Airbone unit, they might hook you up again) Honestly, it wasn’t the hardest thing I’ve ever done: a lot of running, pull-ups and push-ups, etc., but it was something I wanted so bad that I refused to let anything get in the way. That meant dialing in, staying focused on the goal, and trusting the process. Which, when jumping out of an airplane can be a tall order 😅 (Did I mention I have a fear of heights?) Anyways… I guess where I’m going with this: Only you know what lengths you’re willing to go for the right opportunity. That opportunity might only come around once, and when it does… Are you gonna be ready to seize the moment to get what you want? You can’t reach your goals without reaching first.

Things I have learned living near a volcano that apply to your professional career 🌋 1. You can be afraid every single day or.. embrace it! As a professional you might need and want to pivot. Only the brave ones will actually switch careers or implement a new software into their business. You can choose to be afraid of change or embrace it. I have embraced living near a volcanoe 😀 it’s a life changing experience! 2. Old beliefs are often NOT the truth and should stay in the past. For example where I live no one has their emergency backpacks ready. I mean.. at any point the volcanoe could erupt. We live in a yellow zone at all times. Am I going to live like them? No, I will be prepared 😀👌. Same with your business or professional growth. What worked for someone may not apply to you. It’s great to seek advice but only apply the advice that will actually take you to the next stage. Listen with grace but don’t listen to business owners who are stuck in their ways. #motivation #youngprofessionals

It’s a big day in Tuscaloosa. Today marks the start of fall classes at The University of Alabama - Where Legends Are Made! If you’ve been following my weekly #WingletWednesday posts you’re probably thinking this is my most obscure opening line to date. And you would be correct. But stick with me… Occasionally my musings, ramblings, history lessons, sales pitches or opinions are accompanied by art, rather than the more typical photographs, featuring Aviation Partners Blended Winglets. Today is one such post. The winglet watercolor below, which hangs in my office at Boeing Field, is one of my most treasured possessions. It was painted for me by my daughter… at a Pre-K art class when she was 4 years old! Today she starts her Junior year at UA’s Culverhouse College of Business. Congratulations Alexandra Dunn-Cordova, you are halfway through! And to everyone starting fall classes today in T-Town: If you haven’t already, consider a career in aviation, more specifically business and general aviation. This dynamic, but often overlooked, industry doesn’t only hire pilots, technicians and engineers (although plenty of those are always needed). Companies in business/general aviation also employ people in accounting, finance, management, sales, marketing, software development, IT, HR, data analysis, supply chain, government affairs, law, interior design… the list goes on. Industry associations such as the National Business Aviation Association, which includes their amazing Young Professionals in Business Aviation (YoPro) group, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, and Women in Corporate Aviation, to name a few, offer great resources (including scholarship opportunities) for young people exploring their career options. My aviation network can add any groups I missed in the comments. In closing, for those graduating in the next few years, YOU are the generation who will lead the charge towards ever more exciting, innovative, efficient and sustainable aviation.
