Helping Clients Find Cost Savings Hiding in Plain Sight 🔍💼   Prescription medication costs are accelerating at an unsustainable rate for self-funded employers. It’s often driven from high-cost drugs, like Humira & Remicade, that average $35,000+ per member per year and are consistently in the top 5 specialty drugs for all employers. Left unchecked, this trend is expected to accelerate into the foreseeable future.   In our latest proactive insights analysis, we worked closely with a client to delve deep into their biosimilar options for high-cost medications. Our findings reveal significant potential for cost reduction, with projected savings of at least 25%. 💰💊 The savings opportunities are sourced from two areas:   1. Increase use of biosimilars: Despite being as much as 50% cheaper, many of the client’s members were filling script for the brand name specialty drug. For an employer with 50k employees, even a modest conversion toward biosimilars could yield $300,000-$500,000 in savings. **It is important for employers to discuss these changes with their PBM to understand the potential impact on Rx rebates.** 2. Change the place of service: When we analyzed the site of care, the data revealed that each injection’s price ranged from $335 to $1,250 depending upon whether the care took place - in a home, office, inpatient hospital, or emergency room. These additional savings could be achieved whether or not the patient switched to a biosimilar.   💡📊 Our analysis helped our client focus their attention and resources toward an opportunity they could act on without having to change their plan designs. The analysis also provided the client with some additional validation in support of offering an onsite clinic.
