A #gembawalk, from the Japanese "gemba" meaning "the real place," is a walkthrough of the workplace designed to observe employees, understand tasks, and identify productivity improvements. This lean method promotes continuous improvement by connecting leaders to the real work happening on the shop floor. Here are some reasons to perform a gemba walk. - Watch, listen, learn and help. - Identify problems and opportunities for improvement. - Reduce waste and increase efficiency. - Foster strong relationships and morale. - Foster a culture of continuous improvement. As EHS leaders, it's crucial to prioritize developing our teams and customers (department leaders). Our safety approach has evolved significantly since OSHA's inception. One common challenge we encounter is that the effectiveness of our customers is often a reflection of our teachings. Relying solely on "red vs green" board metrics can hinder progress, as safety goes beyond merely avoiding negative outcomes. This binary approach can inadvertently foster underreporting. Ultimately, what truly counts is our ability to allow folks to make mistakes (human error) and focus on process safety. In striving for safety excellence, it's essential to focus on studying successful models, best practices and benchmark with other safety leaders rather than just analyzing failures. Today, my EHS team begins Do Safety Diffrently by Conklin and Dekker. A great post and a great lesson from Marcus Köhnlein on process improvement. While technology plays a role these days, sometimes it just comes down to thinking about how processes can improve. If we look back to the repair of the 10 freeway after the Northridge earthquake in 1994, it was thought repairs could take as long as 18 months. C.C. Myers Inc. said they could do it in 6 months and everyone thought they were crazy! However, with some out of the box thinking and getting all of the stakeholders together to agree to streamlined processes for permits and working round the clock, they completed the task in a mere 66 days! Thats right, not 6 months. Also 74 days ahead of schedule, saving untold millions of dollars. If you think something can't be improved upon, think again! Health insurance and healthcare, we can do better and do it for less.
