This poll was nearly split, which doesn't surprise me. I believe the caveat is: Most people want "both" and that's where it is complicated. You can't "put the genie back in the bottle" and all too often a candidate will request their "dream job" at their "dream company" but when they receive a "pass", they ask to interview for the job that aligns with their current experience, but the client at that point knows their motivations. This is also where knowing the company / client is quite important, as some will bend for the right candidate. It's almost never straight forward! Poll: https://lnkd.in/ebtEzk4D

LESSONS FROM THE JOB MARKET In a "normal" market, potential employers always ask, "How is your job search going?" or "Are you in the process of interviewing with anyone else?" Or something like that. Because they don't want to miss out on candidates by moving too slowly. It seems like employers aren't asking these questions now. As you conduct an interview if the candidate seems very nervous, keep in mind you do not know what prompted them to find a new position. Do not get frustrated or uninterested the candidate might have much to offer as a worker. Work with them to gather the information you need, build trust and schedule a follow-up phone call if needed. Candidates are real people with real-life pressure not a number treat them as such. 💡

There's a big difference between giving yourself options in the market and spraying your CV to every role you see posted. When going to market, it's important to give yourself more than one option, for a couple of reasons: 1. It's so important to talk to different teams (if possible) to understand which align best with your personal and career aspirations. It's hard to tell if a role and team is right for you if that is the only interview process you've gone through. 2. You always want to get the most out of your move - only having one offer on the table and no other prospects in sight, will not give you the upper hand when it comes to negotiations. Does this mean you want to take your CV or hand your CV off to a recruiter and tell them to put you in for every role with any firm thats out there? Absolutely not. Before you make any formal submissions, know what firms you want to target first. Depending on how your submissions go with those, you should then look to expand from there. There's a very tight rope to walk when you are going out to market in order to give yourself the best chance to have options while also not putting yourself in a situation where you are actually hurting your search. If you are working solo on your move, make sure to have a plan in place before you go out to market. On the other hand, if you are working with a recruiter, make sure you are working with someone who has your best interest in mind.

Have you ever felt the rug being pulled from under you after a second job interview invitation, only to hear they've hired someone else? 🙁 This is a tough blow, no doubt, especially as you've already done some research, preparation or even a presentation! It's a bitter pill to swallow – and we've all been there. But why does it happen? Not every rejection is about you. Quite often, it comes down to details out of your control, like internal decisions in the company or a candidate with slightly more experience in a specific area. Or the company just meets someone who impressed them so much in the interview that they offer a job on the spot. I know it's very disappointing and leaves a candidate with bad taste (dare I say a 'poor candidate experience'?). But how do you bounce back? Avoid taking it personally. Shift the perspective from 'rejection' to 'redirection'. What's important is always to remember that the job that's truly meant for you is waiting just around the corner. Has it ever happened to you? Picture yourself being approached for a job opportunity by a recruiter. They reach out unexpectedly, catching you off guard, but you decide to entertain the conversation. Impressed by the recruiter's description of the position, you agree to a call to delve deeper into the opportunity. Then, during the interview, you're hit with questions like "What attracts you to this position?" or "Why do you think you're the right fit for this role?" or "What motivates your desire to leave your current job?" It's absurd, isn't it? Yet, it's a common occurrence. Recruiters need to level up when gauging motivations. A way better question: "What does your current situation look like? I've had many times when I've introduced candidates to my clients and they've moved on to the interview stage, only for the candidates then to cancel. Sure, part of my job is to understand what candidates want, their current job-hunting situation, and why they're thinking of changing jobs. But there's one thing I sure can't control: figuring out if candidates are truly ready for a change. Even if the job I offer is great, if they're not ready for a new job, there's little I can do. So, before you even talk to a recruiter or agree to a call, try to reflect and think about if you're really ready to make that move. This way, you won't waste your time, my time, or the time of the company that's looking forward to meeting you and setting up an interview for you. I recently came across a quote that made me laugh and think: "Any job interview is a conversation between two people who aren't exactly telling the truth." So true, right? Candidates often shine up their best qualities and maybe stretch the truth a bit. Meanwhile, employers highlight the best parts of the job and the company, sometimes skipping over the tough stuff. This is understandable—candidates want to impress and secure the job, while employers aim to attract top talent. However, I believe honesty is key. When both sides are transparent about their strengths and the real challenges, it leads to better job matches and more satisfying careers. I prefer both to tell the truth, to avoid any unpleasant surprises down the line.
