Last week, i’m excited to say, I completed the Artificial Intelligence in Health Care program at MIT Sloan School of Management. I learned a ton, was out over my skis in many of the assignments, and was introduced to some truly inspiring individuals. In the final assignment, I was asked to apply the AI decision framework we learned throughout the course for a specific use case in health care. My use case was “The Role of Machine Learning in Enhancing Patient Care and Reducing Administrative Burden With Utilization Management Policies”. If you are bored enough to keep reading (bless you), here are some of my initial takeaways: 1. A successful AI model in this use case would need to be limited to a narrow network due to the expansive amount of variable data and interoperability policies currently in place. 2. True stakeholder input would be needed throughout the process of AI model development and must include patients, providers, and payers at every level. 3. Explainability (understanding how the AI model arrived at its conclusion) of this AI model is paramount in development, as certain stakeholder motivations could incentivize a more complex machine learning model that could obscure transparency. 4. Policy making in machine learning in the health care delivery space must start with the ultimate goal of patient-centricity and demand transparency at every level. Overall, I’m encouraged and excited about what the future may hold in regard to health care delivery and machine learning, but policies must be put in place to ensure patient protections as we walk the fine line of encouraging innovation and creating safe guards for our future.

We're excited to share that The AI Collaborative, a group formed by The Health Management Academy, Microsoft, and Nuance in 2022, has had their “AI Maturity Roadmap” published in this month’s AI issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM Group). Microsoft, Nuance Healthcare, and The Health Management Academy partnered with more than 50 AI decision-makers from leading health systems across the United States to establish the first-ever roadmap for healthcare providers implementing AI. The AI Maturity Roadmap is a valuable tool for guiding best practices, investments, and conversations, as health systems advance their use of #HealthcareAI. It's time to dive back into the book I started writing. One intriguing aspect the book plans to explore is how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to assist patients in becoming more empowered and engaged. As AI continues to advance, it has the potential to help individuals navigate the complex healthcare system, access relevant information, and make more informed decisions about their health. However, it's important to approach this topic with care and ensure that any AI-related content is grounded in reliable research and best practices. The book will strive to present a balanced perspective, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges associated with utilizing AI in the healthcare context. As the writing progresses, the author will work diligently to create a resource that offers practical, evidence-based guidance to help readers become more proactive and confident in managing their health. While the book is still a work in progress, the ultimate goal is to empower patients and foster better partnerships between individuals and their healthcare providers. Stay tuned for updates on "The Empowered Patient" as the project develops further. In the meantime, the author welcomes feedback and suggestions from readers to help shape this important resource.
