One of the toughest things to do in marketing is stay focused.   The Marketing Intelligence podcast had a great episode a few weeks ago about how top brands use triangulation, which means combining digital tracking, conversion lift studies, and marketing mix modeling to get a true picture of the effectiveness of their marketing spend. But what I really loved was a part of the conversation about focusing on a few key channels and not trying to do everything.   I see a lot of clients trying to do too many things with too few resources, and result is that they don't do any of it well. They spend a huge portion of their budget creating material for and managing all their different channels, and they spread themselves so thin that they don't make an impact anywhere.   In the podcast, Michael Kaminsky recommends focusing on just your one or few top performing channels and doing those really well and then, once you can't do any better with the channels you're in, scaling to additional platforms to add incremental revenue. Great conversation from Chris Walker and Andrew (Drew) Smith on objective attribution. It's not just about multi-touch or single-touch. ❌ It's not the inherent gaps in digital attribution and the benefits that self-reported attribution can bring to the table. ❌ There's a balance needed. You can't just use one piece of software that uses first touch attribution or last touch, etc. to make strategic decisions. In the same way you can't just use self-reported attribution or a 10K MMM that takes 5 years to build. You need multiple perspectives ESPECIALLY the ones that peek into dark social and other offline sources. At the same time you have to be aware of a fractured ecosystem. If each department or program has its own model, they are naturally incentivized to prove their effectiveness and you'll get some conflicting data that leads to stalemates. There are some ways to safeguard against this: * Use attribution models that make sense for the lifecycle stage ✅ * Break apart data silos across teams and use a single system (CRM or other SSOT) to get everyone on the same page ✅ * Know there are inherent biases and *ideally* have a C-suite level top-down attribution authority who can make strategic decisions in addition to bottom-up reporting from departments. This is the Midjourney output that nets my client over 300 leads per month. I would have spent hours trying to find the right image on some crappy ass stock photo pool, and likely paid a pretty penny for it but, I literally spent 30mins crafting and refining this image, for my exact target market. 35 year old female doctor. New Zealand hospital. Shallow depth of field. Bright and light. I've seen a few posts around saying using AI is a "cop out" and "cheating". I call bullshit. For all that time I would have spent sourcing an image, I have been able to use it to; work harder on their ad account, give them time for video content, have scope to create a podcast, create a full end to end automation package were leads fall into their lap daily. 🎙🎙 67 - Year In Review 2023: pathways towards profitability, real-time data and quality content - I had the pleasure of being a guest on my podcast, with a huge thank you to James Horrax for interviewing me!  💡 As the year comes to an end, we discussed key developments and themes that were brought up by guests.  Here are three key themes from 2023, a year of reckoning and innovation for many businesses and investors, that we reflected on: 1️⃣ Pathways to profitability: it was a make-or-break year for many startups, as funding and higher valuations became more difficult to access if pathways to profitability were not clearly demonstrated to investors.  VCs themselves have faced difficulties raising from LPs and M&A activity between VCs is on the cards.     2️⃣ Leveraging real-time data: the spotlight on real-time data has been relentless, and we've explored its significance extensively on the podcast across the insurtech, health and safety, wholesale FX and marketing industries amongst others. In a rapidly evolving landscape, real-time data is not just power anymore - it's survival. 3️⃣ Creating quality content: the year showcased an emphasis on quality across creating content, engaging with communities and customers. Cold email and LinkedIn outreach has become saturated particularly with AI generated copy.  Companies are creating a pull effect through quality content that is not sales like, but rather delivers value to the communities and stakeholders they engage with - examples include checklist infographics, comprehensive guides, video content and hosting thought leadership events.
