Officials from the FDA note that such devices have not been cleared for this use case and can lead to inaccurate readings that could pose serious dangers for diabetics. Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, which monitored more than 15,000 individuals from birth until age 24, researchers found that unhealthy eating habits early in life—high intake of sugar sweetened beverages, fried food, and total calories coupled with a low intake of fruit and vegetables—are associated with a greater risk for obesity in early adulthood. Examinations of 100 axial spondyloarthritis patients revealed that the spine is less mobile in the morning than in the afternoon, a finding researchers should keep in mind for future studies involving patients with this condition. It’s hoped that AI could assist ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and other retinal diseases, reducing costs and improving patient outcomes. Making it one of the leading causes of disability and medical costs in the US. ——— I too had “undiagnosable” chronic stomach issues for nearly a decade and from my own observations and experiences… The root cause of this rise is pretty evident. ——— → Excess and unmanaged stress → Restrictive eating → Poor lifestyle habits like… Not getting enough fruits, vegetables, movement, or sleep. ——— Of course there are other factors such as → Medication use → Traveling → Drinking too much caffeine or alcohol → Eating too much at once or too fast As well as genetic + environmental factors when it comes to autoimmune related GI conditions like Chron’s and Celiac’s. ——— But for the vast majority… At the root of our collective stomach issues is: → Not taking care of our bodies → Putting too much stress on ourselves and not knowing how to manage it ——— And research on the gut-brain axis and interconnectivity of the gut microbiome are here to back that. Yet that’s not usually how we solve for GI issues. ——— Common treatments are fiber supplements and the low FODMAP diet. Avoiding FODMAPs, for ex, is great in the short term but over time isn’t the most sustainable and its effects start to level off. It can also result in unintended weight loss due to limited food selection. ——— Other treatment options include: → Antidepressants → Laxatives → Pain meds → Anticholinergics (prevent spasms) → Antidiarrheals ——— All of which have short and long term side effects. Even if they do create acute relief. ——— I’d love to see more lifestyle, stress management, and mental health care embedded into digestive treatment. Even if they don’t appear to be significant drivers of improvement in the short term, they are much more sustainable long term fixes. ——— Cause they get to the root cause. Most people are unwilling to consider the cause of their stomach issues is their own stress or lifestyle. ——— I can definitely relate to that. The researchers estimated that the memory boost observed in people taking the multivitamin corresponded to a two-year reduction in brain aging, meaning that they theoretically tested as well as someone two years younger, Dr. Vyas said. Experts not involved in the research said that the study was well-designed: It included a large number of participants and used reputable cognitive tests. But the findings “are relatively modest,” said Dr. Hussein Yassine, an associate professor of neurology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. While some people may have truly benefited from the multivitamin, he said, a majority most likely did not. Dr. Yassine added that claiming a multivitamin could slow cognitive aging by two years “is really a stretch.” To arrive at that conclusion, the researchers compared the performance of the multivitamin group with average test scores by age. Dr. Yassine took issue with that technique, calling the interpretation “misleading.” That calculation was also the primary concern cited by Dr. Pieter Cohen, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance in Boston who studies supplements. Dr. Manson agreed that more research on multivitamins was needed. Follow-up studies should analyze who benefited from the supplements and why, Dr. Yassine added. It’s possible, for example, that the gains were driven by people who weren’t previously consuming enough of certain nutrients important for brain health, such as vitamin B12, vitamin D and zinc. Multivitamins can be useful for certain people, such as those with conditions that affect their ability to absorb nutrients, Dr. Cohen said, but most healthy people don’t need one. “I’m not going to be recommending multivitamins to improve memory based on this data,” he said. The COSMOS study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and chocolate maker Mars Inc., was originally designed to see whether multivitamins or supplements containing cocoa flavanols would affect heart disease or cancer risk. But the trial found little benefit of either supplement. Other studies have largely shown that multivitamins didn’t improve cognition or prevent dementia. For example, in a trial of nearly 6,000 male physicians tracked for 12 years, those who took a multivitamin performed no better on cognitive or memory tests than those who took a placebo. Research has consistently found, however, that a healthy diet and other lifestyle interventions can benefit the brain. The estrobolome is a collection of bacteria in our gut that plays a key role in processing and modulating estrogen. Ovaries produce estrogens and they can travel around the body in an activated form. To clear estrogens from our body, they are deactivated by the liver and removed through the bile duct and then into our gut and eventually our feces. For conversion of estrogens to the activated form, an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase is required and this can be secreted by microbes and so estrogens can be ‘recycled’ – instead of losing them in our poo, they can be reactivated by the estrobolome. It is interesting that other hormones such as progestogens can be recycled in the same way. The activation of estrogen in the gut means that there is more estrogen to, for example, help in gut repair. There is some evidence to suggest that this activity could also play a key role in influencing estrogen activity outside the gut after the menopause – for example in the cardiovascular system and brain. There is also a growing body of evidence to suggest that the gut-hormone axis influences the amount of active estrogen circulating in the body which, in turn, could impact our weight, libido and mood as well as our heart, brain and vaginal health. During the perimenopause it looks like our gut microbiome gets disrupted by fluctuating estrogen levels, including the composition of bacteria in the estrobolome. The disruption of the microbiome may be directly associated with the common menopausal symptoms we are all familiar with, such as increased incidence of IBS, bloating, hot flashes, weight gain, anxiety, brain fog, low energy, mood swings, loss of libido, vaginal pain and dryness, urinary tract infections, and poor sleep. Certain gut bacteria are involved in the production of short chain fatty acids which allows us to digest and break down fiber. If our microbiome is low on these beneficial bacteria it can make the digestion of certain vegetables, lentils and pulses much more challenging which leads to wind and bloating. But why is estrogen so important to us? Estrogen regulates many processes in the body, the brain, skin, musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system and in the tissues of our renal tract and genital tract. When the gut microbiome is healthy, the estrobolome produces just the right amount of beta-glucuronidase to keep estrogen levels balanced. However, when the gut biome is out of kilter, beta-glucuronidase activity may be altered which may alter active estrogen levels in the gut and maybe throughout the rest of our body, impacting on symptoms and long term health consequences.
