As Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of the Lumina Foundation said in Forbes: "Service years can help young adults develop real-world experience and professional skills, improve their communities, and foster something else we badly need: civic renewal. It is a step toward something that matters to them as individuals, and to our communities—not a step away from the urgent task of building work and life skills through education and training that lead to credentials of value." Best of all, a study we conducted with The Burning Glass Institute found that those who participate in #serviceyear programs without a Bachelor’s degree are over twice as likely to go on to earn their Bachelor’s degrees compared to their peers. The overall idea is spectacular: A collective effort to turnaround and reframe the value/purpose of higher education narrative. I always thought that the various state Board of Regents / Coordinating Boards would help lead a common message campaign, at least within their state. (However, I can also think of many reasons why they wouldn’t do that too. $) Regardless … “If universities came together that way, in a sort of alliance for higher learning, “you would have the best [advertising] agencies in the country bidding on it.” Instead, he [Roy Spence] said, ‘what you have now is every university doing its own thing, when what we have is an industry image issue.’” And focus the message to address the student’s want and worries: “Yet universities don’t like talking about jobs and salaries, said Marcus Collins, a former head of strategy at Wieden+Kennedy, New York, and a marketing executive who has done work for Apple and McDonald’s, headed a digital strategy for Beyoncé and is now a clinical professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. “I see it as an incongruence of expectations and ambitions,” Collins said. Universities believe themselves to be places people come to learn, he said, “and in doing so you get some skills that will help you in the job market.” But consumers are increasingly focused first and foremost on careers; 62 percent say they would be willing to go into debt to pay for college if they knew there was a good job at the end, those Gates Foundation focus groups found.” #value #studentcentered #collectiveimpact

The power of dual enrollment! Dual enrollment programs offer numerous benefits to students. They provide a head start on college credits, allowing students to potentially graduate earlier or explore advanced coursework sooner. Additionally, they can save money on tuition costs and provide a smoother transition from high school to college. Dual enrollment also offers a taste of college-level rigor, better-preparing students for the academic challenges ahead.

WARNING - aspirational post about #highereducation !!! If you didn't already hear it, higher education confidence amongst the public has sunk to a new low - this is not surprising for many reasons. What is surprising, to me anyway, is the lack of perspective. What an AMAZING time to be an innovator within higher ed. The public is saying, if you don't innovate, transform, or change, we will value you less. BUT, what if some of our institutions do innovate, change, and transform? This is why I am honored to work at Lindenwood University, where we have increased new student enrollment, moved from DII to DI athletics, launched Lindenwood Global, closed on our acquisition of Dorsey College, and realigned our university to be student-centric - all within 18 months. I KNOW there are other institutions out there that will help restore public trust in higher ed. How do I know? Well, I've interviewed 228 of them on The EdUp Experience #podcast and wrote about 125 of them in Commencement: The Beginning of a New Era in Higher Education. We can accept past failures of our industry, or use consumer sentiment as a catalyst for change.
