The members of GeorgiaCIO had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this week to go behind the scenes of the world's busiest and most efficient airport--Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport! City of Atlanta CIO Jason Sankey and CTO of Hartsfield-Jackson Chris Crist hosted the chapter, showing off the stunning technology required to get nearly 300,000 people through its 196 gates, six terminals and five runways everyday of the year. The stakes of this daily operation are massive! If something goes down at ATL, the effects are literally felt around the world. Adding to this daily monumental feat is the unique challenge of expanding ATL's capacity. Hartsfield-Jackson is landlocked and unable to extend its footprint and so the airport has to pull off being the world's busiest on a land mass 20% the size of DFW! All new construction is done in modules, where massive segments of updated terminal space are constructed to near completion and then rolled at 1 mph in the dead of night where these 700 ton sections are put in place before the next morning's travel! All of us who were there came away with a new appreciation and admiration for the incredible "machine" that is Hartsfield-Jackson and for the technologists and engineers that keep it running! It's inspiring being around such remarkable leadership. And in GeorgiaCIO there is always inspiring leadership around because the room is full of technology innovators. And that's the real strength of the network! The events are top tier, but the gold of the network is being connected to 1,400 preeminent technology executives around the country. Looks like an incredible experience. 20 years ago I was selling hardware that went on the tugs that would pull planes around for maintenance. I got a once in a lifetime chance to drive across active runways pulling 737 jets. I was like a little kid in a candy store!!
