How important is it for a CEO to love the sector they are in? In my mind it makes a big difference. That's why I was so pleased to see the anouncement by the AFL (Australian Football League) that Andrew Dillon will be their next CEO from October. And here's why...
At a grassroots level AFL has been in Andrew’s blood. He played for Old Xaverians Football Club in the VAFA League from 1989-2005. Amassing 290 games, (6) consecutive premierships and Life Membership. He also coached the Kew Comets Junior Girls Football Club from 2014-2018.
But let’s take a look at Andrew’s career history for further insights –
General Manager of Football Operations, Legal, Integrity, and General Counsel – AFL – 12 yrs
General Manager of Legal and Business Affairs - AFL – 7 yrs
Legal Counsel – AFL – 4 yrs
Inhouse Legal Counsel – Village Road Show – 3 yrs
Commercial Solicitor – Corrs Chambers Westgarth – 3 yrs
Underpinning these career roles Andrew has a Bach of Commerce and Law from Melbourne University and a Grad Dip in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Aust.
He is clearly a strategic, sharp and astute thinker demonstrated through his –
🎯 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐅𝐋'𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬. Andrew’s career at the AFL has provided a strong background in the business of football (both on field & off field competition.) He has provided general counsel to the AFL on a wide range of legal matters, such as contracts, intellectual property, & broadcasting rights which includes the record $4.5 billion broadcasting deal with Foxtel, Seven, Telstra and Kado which runs from 2025 to 2031.
And we know the AFL CEO is a challenging role because you are -
🎯 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬. The CEO presides over the 18-team men’s competition and the rapidly expanding AFLW and reports to the AFL Commission filled with corporate heavy weights and those that sit on club Boards. Plus working through a raft of issues such as concussion in sport, negotiations around collective bargaining agreements with AFL/AFLW, potential new team/stadium in Tasmania. On a tactical level this week Crowded House pulled their booking as AFL Grand Final entertainment, nothing's been said but I suspect Neil Finn's done a Hammie!
Without question it is no picnic being the CEO of the AFL. It is a tough, challenging, and demanding job. But the role also promises the opportunity to influence and shape the future of the game that is so deeply cherished and woven into the fabric of our Australian culture and heritage.
And when I look at Andrew Dillon’s career, passion for the game and strategic smarts, well I cannot help but feel that our great AFL game has a safe pair of hands to chaperone it into its next exciting phase of growth and development.
