I read this recently from Anselmo Ramos and Gaston Bigio of GUT. IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? AR: I think ad people need to be less cynical about our industry. We need to fall in love with our profession again. We get paid to think and produce brave ideas for some of the best brands on Earth. We need to have more gratitude and confidence. I also think we need to do a better job at capturing the value of our ideas. Okay, that was more than one thing… GB: Awards. I think there are too many. In sports, for example, there is a much clearer path for the main, global competitions. In advertising there are just too many tracks. ME: I couldn't agree more.

Last Friday we celebrated the awards. Today, we celebrated the people behind the awards. A grand haul of 18 wins. 7 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze and 1 Grand Prix! Whilst holding bragging rights for ‘effectiveness’, we are beyond ecstatic to also be crowned as most ‘creative’ at the recent 4As Advertising Festival. We are in a business of ideas and people. Traditionally, these campaigns manifest through FYC billboard ads scattered around major movie studios, lavish wining and dining events for voters, and various solicitation efforts. Yet, this year, an intriguing shift has caught our attention—a surge in B2C FYC advertising on popular social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok. You may have even seen these FYC-labelled movie trailers popping up yourself. The question arises: Why target fans who cannot cast votes? 🤔 A symbiotic cycle comes into play here. When a film generates awards buzz, fans eagerly fill the cinemas to experience it. Simultaneously, when fans generate a compelling buzz around a film, they craft a narrative that significantly boosts its chances of clinching the coveted award. This is highlighted by the 'nomination bump,' where the ten best picture nominations in 2023 generated an extra $80 million in sales after receiving the nominations. Also, remember the fan campaigns that propelled Leonardo DiCaprio to win his first Oscar for "The Revenant"? Was Leo the standout performer that year? Arguably. However, the studio wholeheartedly embraced the narrative, and fans rallied behind it, creating a compelling force that made it increasingly difficult for voters to overlook - whilst also bagging that extra box office revenue. Here are three key takeaways from today's enlightening discussions: 1️⃣ The Changing Media Landscape: Insightful sessions from Simon Frazier of The IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) and Olya Dyachuk of The HEINEKEN Company, delved into the power of metrics and attention data in fuelling efficiency 2️⃣ Creativity and measurement are complementary: Martyn Bentley of AudienceProject and Peter Grant of Boots UK highlighted the growing importance of balancing measurement and creativity. POV: You create a wonky billboard stunt so believable than someone alerts the council and a safety fence is installed Waitrose and Saatchi & Saatchi UK created this wonky billboard to demonstrate their recent price drops. A concerned member of the public notified the council over fears of public safety. As a result, the OOH campaign has earned a tonne of media online. I’ve seen a few of these billboard stunts from brands like Specsavers and McDonalds lately, but I like the value add here: ✔️ Simple message (price drops) ✔️ Community participation (calling the council) ✔️ Talkability (press coverage) What do you think?

The Cannes Lions – the major global advertising festival – has just completed and prizes have been awarded. See this AdWeek story about who won what and for what ideas. This is a remarkable event, that showcases the best of what creative minds have generated over the previous year in numerous categories – but all are surprising and impactful with their ingenuity.   Read this and you can pick your own winner – maybe it is the Peruvian cement company, that designed city pathway tiles, that help visually impaired people? What a simple and yet powerful idea. Or maybe it is the Pedigree adoptable dog campaign, that uses artificial intelligence in a helpful and lovely way. There are moving ads that elevate the role of women and girls in sports and societies and also more classic – brand or product selling campaigns, that are beautifully executed, like the Magnum ice cream outdoor campaign.   These campaigns are important not just from a marketing perspective – I think they have a greater societal meaning, as they always deal with relevant issues and blend the traditional media and the latest technology.
