Looking back on my career so far, even the most desirable opportunities I thought I missed out on turned out not to be important. Before law school, it was joining the fastest-growing tech company ever (it did not continue to grow). In law school, it was joining that law firm that seemed like it had the perfect culture and mixture of work (much of the work went away, so did the lawyers). As a lawyer, it was joining that one client I worked for that has skyrocketed since the pandemic (it was not a predictable outcome). The reason these opportunities didn't turn out to be important is because (1) I overrated the potential of these opportunities, (2) I underestimated how many paths there are, (3) I discovered my values evolve over time, and I can find work that's a better fit to my values.

I recently caught up with a friend, and he was like, "Hey Vance, what's this partnership thing you do at Employment Hero?" Usually, I'd reply with a one liner, "I form strategic partnerships and grow businesses together," but then it got me thinking that not everyone grasps what partnership really involves. Having been in the partnership role for a while, I've found that it's all about putting the partner's interests first. It's not just about listing out all the incentives to them; it's about figuring out how you can support them to achieve their goals. Anyone can sign on the dotted line, but making the partnership thrive is a whole different ballgame. I believe successful partnerships require alignment of expectations and goals. Both parties should have the same level of commitment and be invested in growing the partnership. Each region has its unique approach to partnership, so being dynamic and flexible is key to ensuring mutual wins. It's a long term journey and most of the time the partnership will eventually become friendship. What's your take on it? 😀

One of my clients hired Biglaw for a project. The work product is stellar. It took a month to complete, but it looks and feels like best-in-class work product. And yet, it missed the mark. By a mile. Every engagement must have an outcome. You can’t deliver sophisticated analysis with no direction on implementation. It’s the equivalent of handing me a bunch of tools, a car that won’t start, and asking me to fix it. The car’s not moving. It’s easy to shift the burden and focus only on the specific ask. From our recent client visits with firms in New York, California and Texas, we are seeing one strong theme coming through. Everyone wants 4th and 5th years. Most firms feel they have enough 1st and 2nd years and are very unlikely to hire at this level. At a 3rd year level things start to look up. For 6th and 7th years, it's an important time to ensure you are in the best place for progression and if not, to position yourself in a firm where you have a clearer, less opaque runway to partnership. You should definitely be talking to us. But 4th and 5th years, with good deal experience, you are in the hot seat. This is not about job opportunities, this about choosing the best firm for your career. You have options. Choose wisely!
