#MemorialDay is a time to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country - their sacrifices for the sake of our freedoms will always be remembered. As this weekend signals the start of summer and slower days, take a moment to reflect on what this time truly represents and recognize those that have served and continue to serve our country along with the families that support them. #WeRemember

Judaism is deeply concerned with justice. There are so, so many Jewish activists and community leaders speaking out against the genocide. Jewish activists have played vital roles in so many justice and liberation movements, for example, the fight to end apartheid in South Africa. It’s zero surprise that so many Jewish people and organisations are speaking up and out, refusing to let the genocide continue. Some corners of the internet will tell you that being Jewish means being Zionist. These groups often exclude anti-Zionist Jews, while claiming to speak for all Jewish people. Of course, they can’t speak for an entire religion or ethnicity. But people can speak for themselves. And many thousands of Jews are saying: Palestinians deserve freedom. Ceasefire now.

Bridging Histories for a Better Future: Insights from a Transformative Conversation I recently tuned in to an extraordinary 60-minute interview hosted by Anderson Cooper. The dialogue unfolded between descendants of enslaved individuals and descendants of oppressors, addressing the weighty subject of reconciliation. This conversation mirrored the journey organizations must embark on to foster active equity. Here are some takeaways on initiating these pivotal discussions within your workspace: 1. Confront Privilege: Privilege is like an invisible passport of ease; it’s time we use it for collective good. Consider: What effortless advantages do you carry? How can you spare 5 minutes to extend a helping hand? 2. Mutual Reconciliation Proposals: Equity is not a one-sided narrative. Like a transparent salary disclosure, both parties must come prepared with solutions and measures for success, avoiding the pitfalls of imbalance in dialogue. 3. Recognize the Difficulty of ‘The Ask’: For descendants of the enslaved, raising a voice has historically been met with severe consequences. The workplace is no different. Acknowledge the courage it takes to ask not just for survival, but for the means to thrive. 4. Embrace Emotional Expression: Emotional suppression is a silent norm for Black individuals in professional settings. Let’s break that mold. Emotions are a human right, not a professional liability. 5. Patience in Progress: Resistance to change is no deterrent. It’s an invitation to sit down, roll up our sleeves, and work through the challenges—snacks in hand and a shared commitment to see it through. This discussion is a powerful reminder that the road to reconciliation and equity is not a sprint but a marathon. Let’s run it together Black UX Labs #Equity #Inclusion #CorporateResponsibility #Leadership
In 2019, following a year-long search of the bottom of the Mobile River in Alabama, marine archaeologists identified the well-preserved remains of the Clotilda, the last ship to carry enslaved people to the U.S. As the recent 60 MINUTES segment below shows, descendants of the Clotilda’s survivors have been keeping their ancestors’ memory alive for generations by sharing stories of the ship and its 110 enslaved passengers. Their efforts have brought attention to #Africatown, the Alabama community that Clotilda survivors founded, and the Clotilda Descendants Association, which helped organize a recent reconciliation roundtable with descendants of the Alabama slaveowner who conspired to sneak the ship into the U.S. in 1860. Jeremy Ellis — a mentee and one of my favorite Accenture folks despite always razzing me when my sports teams lose (yes, I know your Auburn University Tigers just crushed my Irish in hoops by 30) — is the current president of the Association and a direct descendant of Pollee and Rose Allen, two of the enslaved Africans aboard the Clotilda. For him and the other Association members, the Clotilda’s discovery and the story of their ancestors represent an opportunity to reckon with our past, but it is also about how families and communities — especially ones that live side-by-side — can grant grace, experience healing, and achieve reconciliation in the present day. Remembering is crucial.
Monday's Remember Slavery Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who suffered and resisted oppression. It also allows us to reinforce our determination to #FightRacism, which remains a legacy of one of the darkest chapters in human history. "Descendants of enslaved Africans and people of African descent are still fighting for equal rights and freedoms around the world”, said UN Secretary General António Guterres. “Today and every day, we reject the legacy of this horrific crime against humanity.” Join us in honouring the victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade by advocating for equality and justice for all. https://lnkd.in/eKVNaF8T
