Building the GTM of 2027 • Also building the best influencer marketing programs on LinkedIn • Fractional GTM • Sales shouldn't be a dirty word :)
My Uber driver just now was a VP of Sales and Marketing Strategy at Time Warner. He retired 7 years ago. Drives Uber as a hobby. He asked me what I do for work, and we got to chatting about how tech and sales have changed over time. I asked him "What's your timeless advice for salespeople and leaders today?" This is what he said: 1️⃣ Have a positive and collaborative attitude about contributing. Be a servant leader. He loves today's collaborative office spaces. 2️⃣ Engage. If you decide to be all in, be all the way in. 3️⃣ Competencies can be taught. Surround yourself with good people, and develop them into your team. 4️⃣ Learn to be a good communicator. 5️⃣ In tech, you'll be exposed to a lot of experiences due to the nature of your work. Embrace both the generalist experience and the specialized experiece. Really glad I struck up that conversation.

Spotify’s recent layoff of 1,500 employees, despite positive earnings, signals a shift in how we view roles like UX Research in the tech industry. Drawing parallels with seasonal work, Meltem explores the implications for professionals in non-business crucial roles and asks unpopular questions about investing differently in research careers. #UXresearch #ResearchCareer #Research #UX #Spotify #Layoffs

Agree! We have to show how design helps achieve business goals in addition to doing right by our users - ideally, how we’re doing both simultaneously.
I teach designers how to gain influence & drive meaningful design work · Airbnb, DoorDash, Salesforce + U.C. Berkeley MBA
Design Thinking isn’t dead because IDEO had layoffs, just like: 🛍️ E-commerce isn’t dead because Amazon had layoffs 🔎 Search isn’t dead because Google had layoffs 🎧 Music isn’t dead because Spotify had layoffs The performance of one company doesn’t make a trend. One tool or process coming into or out of favor doesn’t signal industry-wide trouble. However, in this period of uncertainty, Designers should take stock of our industry’s position. We should ask ourselves, deeply and honestly, whether we’re as aligned to business needs as we should be. I believe Design is approaching an era of increased accountability: Designers who want stakeholders to have faith that design matters will struggle Designers who connect work to business impact will thrive We have a lot of work to do. Let’s get started. #ux #productdesign #design

If you, like me, lost your job because of yet another tech layoff, (most recently Spotify), here's what's worked for me: 🔎 Determine what market and segment you want to work in. I care about sustainability and want to make a difference on the consumer side. Look for the big players and disruptors in that market, and connect with people at those companies. 📔 Organize yourself. I use a simple Google Sheets to keep track of what company I applied for, the job position, who I spoke to, when, and a link to the job description: https://lnkd.in/e7_AmF9F 👐 Don't go HAM applying for every single job, but also don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply for job openings that don't fit all your requirements because it's good experience (interviewing well is a skill) and the company might be a better fit than you initially expected. 🏌️♂️Network and reach out to ex-colleagues and people at companies you've worked with. Be friendly and be clear about what you're reaching out to them for, and how they can help you. In my experience, most people are nice to you if you've been nice to them. 🧠 Use the time between jobs to upskill yourself. I'm taking online Algorithm & Data Structure courses and I'm watching a lot of Product Management content. 😭 Most importantly: be persistent and stay positive! You will realistically be rejected before you find your next job. Talk to others in the same situation as you (feel free to DM me if you want to vent), but keep at it! You're awesome 🌟

What do you do when you don’t get the product manager job because you don’t have a CS degree? What do you do when you don’t get the senior executive job because you are pregnant? You make it your mission to FIX HIRING. Its exactly what Amanda Richardson, CEO of CoderPad, is doing, for companies like Spotify, LinkedIn, Shopify, Lyft and many more. “Hire skills, not BS”, she says. By BS she means resumes 😀 Amanda is also my next guest on Product Leader's Journey. Stay tuned for this fascinating conversation which will air next week. https://lnkd.in/gpgu8TcC #hiring #productleader

For comms professionals, what happened with Lyft's earnings release this week is what keeps us up at night. The lessons from it are worth pausing to take in. The biggest one, to me, is to shrink the room. This is true for announcements with established process around them, such as earnings, and even more so for crisis communications when you have to move quickly. Avoid the well-intentioned bloat and keep a tight team with clear roles and responsibilities. Give this story by Will Valentine a read.

Visionary Leader Driving Product and Experience Excellence | Trusted Advisor & Coach | Formerly Deloitte, Motley Fool, Capital One, Wayfair
I took the weekend to let the reality sink in and think through what to post about Friday’s layoffs at Wayfair. But what can you say after watching key functions decimated in one day? Experience Design (XD), for example, was cut substantially for the second time in 12 months. Dozens of fantastic UX writers, researchers, research ops, product designers, and leaders were let go. Nearly all remote employees were impacted–including me. This breaks my heart. At the same time, I’m insanely proud of what we accomplished over the last 1.5 years. I love leading teams through getting stuff done–and doing the work to figure out what that should be and how to do it as efficiently and scalably as possible. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to do that. We came together to rebuild our team and function (multiple times). We found creative ways to continue delivering fantastic work across the business's core parts. We even had some fun and learned from each other along the way. Some of what we accomplished: - Developed comprehensive, directly applicable customer segmentation - Delivered a 2025+ experience vision and strategy - Redesigned our flagship brand experience - Drove a “fix ‘n’ shift” approach for replatforming - Enabled content creation and management democratization Thank you to Storefront XD for helping make all of this (plus so much more!) happen. So what’s next for me? I am taking some time to figure that out. In the meantime, I have some exciting things in the hopper that I’ll be announcing soon. Stay tuned!

Great read! “So my advice to public company CEOs and CFOs is to establish and adhere to a strict "pens down" rule 48 hours before your release is set to go out, both for the script and release.”

Wow, I’m really taken aback by how much attention my post about Lyft’s earnings snafu has generated. In fact, my post on The Repute turned into an opinion piece on Business Insider. Based on the DMs I'm getting in my inbox, the piece clearly touched on some deep-seated anxieties and past traumatic memories among Communicators (and our cousins in Investor Relations). It's evident that a lot of hard-working people are moving fast and worried balls will get dropped precisely when the spotlight is brightest and hottest. Sending all of you grace, strength, and good luck as we collectively work hard to keep risks and mistakes to a minimum far into the future. https://lnkd.in/gf_dCMe3
