There are run-offs from the roads and industrial activities that discharge into wastewater. Changes in the things we use in everyday life are affecting water quality. New chemicals are replacing old chemicals, and we do not yet fully understand the impact of this . At the same time, technology has moved on. Should we harvest more timber from Northeastern forests as part of our renewable energy portfolio? Not according to a new analysis in The Ecological Society of America's Ecosphere Journal. The study used Forest Service data to explore alternative harvest scenarios in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Climate change, forest ecology, and the fate of wood products and harvest residues were considered. Cary emeritus and co-author Charles Canham says, “Our results indicate that intensifying harvests would decrease net carbon sequestration and hurt attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is because scenarios outside of the current ‘business as usual’ wind up reducing forest carbon storage more than they offset fossil fuel emissions.” #carboncapture #forests https://lnkd.in/exKrzEwA

“Emissions from Harvesting Wood Have Been Overlooked,” is the takeaway from this paper published in Nature. They estimate that global wood harvests will add 3.5 to 4.2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere annually over the coming decades. However, the amount of carbon dioxide they can store is dependent on many factors.
