Many people don’t realize public schools are more segregated today than they were during the civil rights movement. They don’t realize integration is not a bygone fight but a pressing issue of this very moment. But if we don’t even acknowledge that integration is needed today, how can we understand what integration really is? Is integration simply making a perfectly balanced pie chart? Is integration really just hitting the right quotas and percentages? Or is it something more? To be fair, percentages and pie charts are part of integration, but they’re far from the full picture. We believe that a cultural shift toward not only valuing but prioritizing integration is long overdue. School segregation is as much a story of failed public policy as it is of White &/or privileged families thwarting it, which is why we call on White &/or privileged families to consider how the choices we make for our kids affects all kids in our communities. By unknowingly or knowingly separating our children through our choices, privileged families perpetuate social inequity and continue a racist historical legacy. We believe this perpetuation is wrong and that we all must take action to change it. What are you passionate about? While doing my Master's degree in Development Studies, I specialized in local development strategies because I am a firm believer in "local change through global exchange". Over the years, I have had the privilege to work in spaces that allow the communities to shape their narrative as active agents in the development process. What's been more fulfilling is having children contribute to the discourse and shape policy outcomes by having their voices amplified in different forums. Education curriculums do a bit in civic education but that's as far as it goes. Agreeably, more can be done to ensure inclusive and child-friendly policies are passed and upheld. Unfortunately, we continue to witness more children disappear into child labor and become victims of abuse, and we blatantly ignore them while they 'seek' to meaningfully engage in societal processes.
