As winter sets in, regulators, grid operators, and suppliers must learn the lessons of prior seasons to ensure electric grid #reliability. No region, market model, or generation technology is immune to extreme weather conditions. Winter Storm Elliott was a high-profile extreme weather event that impacted Americans as they traveled and hosted families and friends during the holiday season. It wasn’t the first – nor will it be the last – winter storm that has a severe impact on our power grid. Misdiagnosing the cause and the potential remedies, however, makes the United States power system vulnerable to the next Winter Storm Elliott. 🏠 Yesterday in the northwest alone nearly 8000 homes were without power. Distributed #microgrids can be one such solution to overcome this, alongside reducing the strain on the grid from #electrification. Coupling #solar, #wind, #batteries and a non-intermittent generation asset such as a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell can provide a highly resilient localised power station. The #SOFC not only provides electricity at over 60% efficiency but the SOFC can generate heat to supplement district #heating systems.

While Winter Storm Uri definitely wreaked havoc in Texas and the South, the lessons learned are continuing to be discussed at both the NERC and FERC regulatory levels. FERC, in particular, has approved 2 additional "extreme cold weather reliability standards" in its most recent open meeting that will put increased responsibility on grid operators to ensure "implementation of generator freeze protection measures, enhanced cold weather preparedness plans, identification of freeze-sensitive equipment in generators, annual training for generator maintenance and operations personnel, and procedures to improve the coordination of load reduction measures during a grid emergency."[https://lnkd.in/gBB7DgqS] One challenge that regulators will continue to have to deal with is rule ambiguity and practicality in addition to ensuring grid operators have the authority to enforce actions in their respective zones. That said, the good news is that they are aware of this and noted it as an area of improvement. It's good to see that the impact of these more frequent extreme climate events is not falling on deaf ears! https://lnkd.in/gAqzCC2x

Great article written by Sonal Patel with POWER which talks about cold weather reliability for generators, and the critical role natural gas plays. (Being in Houston in Feb 2021 for the deep freeze was an eye opener for sure) FERC and NERC recommended 11 immediate actions focused on ensuring sufficient and reliable gas and electric infrastructure to sustain energy reliability including robust monitoring of how the industry is implementing current cold weather standards. There's also a link to the NAESB report which talks about natural gas heating load and natural gas-fired generators both pulling at the same time during these events. Really good read.
