We’re back with another delight to discover as part of our Hidden Heritage series. It’s too easy to miss this narrow gated alley on Northgate Street – the entrance to Slippery Lane. One of Bath’s few surviving medieval lanes and rare evidence of the city as it was before its 18th century reinvention. This evocatively named street was a direct access between Northgate Street and the riverside ferry, the way of crossing the Avon before Great Pulteney Bridge was constructed. Originally named Alvord Lane, this suggests it was once a ford, and slippery to cross! The lane marks the old boundary of the north gate (demolished in 1754-5) one of the principal routes in and out of the fortified medieval city enclosed by walls and battlements. Slippery Lane is evidenced to date from the 13th century, where deeds from the time identify properties along the lane. Largely untouched by later development, it remains a dark, narrow, enclosed space that feels like you’re stepping back in time – with visible evidence of blocked stone mullioned windows, architraves and doorways. The lane was later enclosed and re-faced to the south with the purchase of land to build Bridge Street terrace in 1773. The buildings along Slippery Lane were retained as workshops and incorporated into the back of the Bridge Street shops and apartments. Similarly, the frontage of Northgate Street was redeveloped from the late 18th century onwards. Today, the Lane forms part of the commercial premises at 12 Northgate Street and 9‐11 Bridge Street. It is gated off to the public, but you can see through to get a sense of what a medieval street would look like. As masterplans come forward for the regeneration of Bath Central Riverside we will call for opportunities to better reveal, enhance, and unlock the potential of this little lane as a significant survivor of Bath’s pre-Georgian heritage, in the vision for the area. Property news…..   Eleven Brindleyplace is to undergo a renovation. Event space and a new café is included in the project. The work is being undertaken by Office Principles North and is anticipated to be completed by this Autumn.   The historic building on the corner of Newhall Street and Edmund Street has been sold prior to auction. The Victorian building is home to The Florence public house and apartments all of which have leases in place.   Eton College and Star Academies is to set up a free selective sixth form college in Dudley. It will be called Eton Star Dudley and will look to recruit pupils from deprived backgrounds.     Plans have been submitted for Colmore Gate on Colmore Row, Birmingham, to be partly demolished. refurbished and extension. The proposals include plans for a 26-storey tower and a 10-storey ‘shoulder’ building.   Property group Wain Estates wishes to build 175 new homes between Q3 Academy and Aston University’s sports fields in Great Barr, Birmingham. A countryside park and playground is also planned.   According to Nationwide, house prices were 5.3% lower year-to-date in August – the largest decline seen since 2009. The cost of a typical home in the UK is £14.6k less than the same period last year.
