The Gilbert Family Foundation, in collaboration with Henry Ford Health and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, is set to establish a cutting-edge 72-bed physical medicine and rehabilitation facility in Detroit, alongside a neurofibromatosis research institute. This initiative underscores the significance of equitable and accessible healthcare services in the region, given that Southeast Michigan's healthcare sector is a significant employer. Despite a dip due to COVID-19, healthcare jobs are expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024 and grow by 22% by 2050. Beyond job growth, this facility aligns with the region's policy goals of developing essential healthcare infrastructure to ensure all residents have access to affordable, high-quality healthcare, which is vital for addressing an aging population and fostering shared prosperity. THIS is important! ⚖MedStar Washington Hospital Center Named the Most Socially and Racially Responsible Hospital in the District!⚖ The 2023-24 Lown Institute Hospitals Index evaluated more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide, and MedStar Washington Hospital Center ranked #1 in D.C. and is one of only 54 U.S. hospitals to earn Honor Roll status with “A” grades in all top categories: Social Responsibility, Health Equity, Value of Care, and Patient Outcomes — key performance metrics that contribute to the overall rating. There are six words that outline Houston Methodist's vision for the second century: unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation. You might be thinking — does the “and” really count? Absolutely, believes Houston Methodist President and CEO Dr. Marc Boom. In fact, it might count most of all. None of these are tradeoffs: There's no place for “or” in top-notch healthcare. "These aren't choices," he explained. "You don't sacrifice service for safety or vice versa." To Houston Methodist, “and” is more than a word: It’s a cultural norm foundational to the system’s sterling reputation, one further cemented by all seven of its hospitals landing in the top decile of the 2023 Vizient Quality and Accountability rankings. So, what does “better” look like when you're one of the best? "It's never about the awards — but we are unapologetically competitive," Dr. Boom said, citing a laundry list of the impressive rival healthcare institutions that line the Houston landscape. AHA should have mentioned that they paid for this study. The elephant(s) in the room are not mentioned: 1. Abuse of 340B. 2. Outrageous executive salaries. 3. Non-healthcare financial interests and contributions. 4. Serving of less impoverished communities 5. Marketing expenditures 6. Lobbying 7. Legal actions against low income patients 8. Failure to differentiate charity spending from for-profit hospitals Some hospitals arguably should not be "not-for-profit". It could be argued that the not-for-profit status funded by the American taxpayer should come with oversight, transparency, improved regulations, and more significant restrictions on executive pay and interests. Should hospitals earn their "not-for-profit" status annually based on tighter regulations? Should there by some kind of claw back? Video | The idea of an extended hospital stay often has been considered a necessary evil of the health care process. After all, you have to be there to get the care you need. But, do you always have to be? The concept of delivering hospital-like services to someone in their home — a necessary experiment during the pandemic — is becoming a more common occurrence around the country. In New Jersey, Hackensack Meridian Health has been leading the effort. This week, the system announced its intentions to partner with the national leader, Medically Home, to expand its Hospital From Home program from three pilot hospitals (Hackensack University Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center and JFK University Medical Center) to its entire system. To be clear, the concept does not work for all conditions or all patients (more on that later), but it has been successful enough since the pilot began in 2022 to expand its reach. CEO Bob Garrett, who has helped the system continually introduce next-generation care options, said the system is thrilled to be able to offer #HospitalFromHome. Read more:
