🌈HAPPY TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY 🌈 Today's Topic: Autism Awareness April is Autism Acceptance Month, and this month raises awareness about autism acceptance and promotes inclusion and connection with individuals with autism. People with autism experience the environment very differently, and therefore it’s important for planners to advocate for landscapes that represent individual's needs. The American Planning Association recommends a “Six Feelings Framework” that focuses on planning and designing around the feelings that adults with autism want to experience in a public space. These include feeling: 1. Connected (is easily reached and entered) 2. Free (offers autonomy) 3. Clear (makes sense) 4. Private (there are places for retreat) 5. Safe (minimal risk for injury) 6. Calm (mitigates physical sensory issues) The Six Feelings Framework helps planners create spaces and infrastructure that are more usable, comfortable, and beneficial to all constituents and ultimately provides inclusion in the community and the built environment in which we all live and thrive. Where are places near you that could benefit from this framework? Source: https://lnkd.in/ghAcqkng

Autism acceptance is more than just recognizing the existence of autism; it's about embracing and celebrating the diversity within the autism spectrum. It involves understanding that autism is a natural variation of human neurology and that individuals with autism have their own unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives. We're excited to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month because it provides an opportunity to promote understanding, empathy, and inclusion for individuals on the spectrum. It's a chance to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and create communities where everyone feels valued and accepted just as they are. By celebrating autism acceptance, we're fostering a world where individuals with autism can thrive, where their voices are heard, and where they are respected for who they are. 🌍 Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, let's take a moment to reflect and spread awareness about the experiences of autistic individuals and their families. Autism affects many people, each unique in their journey. However, many face similar challenges that we must address as a society. 🔎 In the UK alone, over 150,000 individuals are on the waiting list for autism assessment, highlighting the need for better and quicker access to diagnostic services. 🧠 It's concerning that 70% of autistic people experience mental health problems. Mental well-being is crucial, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure support systems are robust and accessible. 💼 Employment is a significant area where autistic individuals can face barriers, with only 29% in any form of employment. We must foster inclusive work environments where neurodiversity is not just accepted, but valued. 🏫 Our schools must be havens of happiness and learning for all children. However, only 26% of autistic pupils feel happy at school, indicating an urgent need for more supportive and understanding educational settings. Let's use this day not just to increase awareness but to ignite action. Let's commit to learning, supporting, and advocating for the well-being and inclusion of autistic individuals in every aspect of life. Because every individual should have the opportunity to thrive. 💜 #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #Inclusion #Neurodiversity #AutismAcceptance
