Include psychographics, not demographics
Demographics are a carryover from marketing personas.
In UX, what we’re really after is psychographics: mental models, motivations, pain points, attitudes, behaviors.
Statistics like age, gender, ethnicity, and location do not cause thinking or behavior, so they have no bearing on the design process.
There is a rising movement in the UX field to completely leave out all demographics from personas (unless your particular product is demographic-specific).

Interesting point Mary! I think that as much as Psychographics are super important in shaping our decision-making in UX, Demographics are also almost if not equally important as well. This is because the Demographics of a certain group of people play a crucial role in affecting their Psychographics.
For example, people between the ages of 20 and 25 living in Africa who are facing a particular problem, and the same age range of people living in Europe, Asia, Australia, or America who are facing the same problem would have different behavior, mental models, and attitudes, towards that problem. This could be a result of their upbringing, cultural norms, political structure, or even friend groups. What is the major difference between these groups of people? Their location (which is an aspect of Demographics).
It can also be that for one group the problem is not a priority so there is a limit to how much they can spend to make the problem go away but when compared to another group we may find that they would do anything to make the problem go away.
So leaving out Demographics in our personas and focusing only on Psychographics will not help us understand the core of how our target audience makes their decisions better.

Tip for picking the right participants for UXR. 💡
Instead of focusing exclusively on demographics consider behaviours, product usage, user goals, and habits when looking for participants.
For instance, seek those who have recently searched for X, used your product or a competitor's, have specific goals with your product, or have particular habits around it.
Demographics can be considered later, unless specific gender, income, or location are needed.

Measures to take to improve inclusive user research. 👇
▶ Update the terminology you use as it evolves.
▶ Structure your data collection and analytics in such a way that can it be used to identify and validate the needs and experiences of all participants.
▶ Monitor cultural shifts to track how perceptions of these terms change.
▶ Track the demographics in all of your studies and identify underrepresented groups.
▶ Revise recruitment strategies with the aim to increase representation in marginalized groups.
▶ Collect feedback on the demographic terms used and measure/track incremental changes in your participants’ perceptions of these terms.
