What an incredible day at Podmasters – so I wanted share it here as the team really went above and beyond. After the election was announced, we scrambled to get a live venue for Oh God, What Now? to do a live show – thanks to our events manager Jill Pearson who secured The Tabernacle which sold out in a matter of days, even before we secured James O’Brien as our special guest. To have our listeners in the room together when the exit polls were announced was incredible – all whilst being live-streamed across the world to thousands of our Patreon supporters, being ably run at the venue by Kieron Leslie and Jade B.. Also thanks to Andrew Turner who's our commercial lead which now extends to selling merch, too. Back at the office with Christopher Jones, Tom Taylor and Simon Williams, we were putting the final touches to the Oh God, What Now? election night livestream – the first livestream we’d ever run and the first big record from our brand-new studio. Built from the ground up for audio and video excellence, I believe we now have one of the best podcast studios in London – finished literally two days before the event. We went live from 10pm on YouTube until the small hours with a rotating cast of panellists from across the Podmasters universe including The Bunker and Paper Cuts. Thanks to Liam Tait, Eliza D. and our departing intern Adam Wright for managing socials, clipping and helping to produce the shows and to James Parrett for the always-excellent design. And of course, to Jacob Dylan Jarvis and my business partner Andrew Harrison who are our content powerhouses, not just writing scripts but hosting the panel, interviews and more. We'd be nowhere without both of your leadership. We’re not a big team – we don’t have a huge amount of live broadcast experience and most of what we did was the first time we’d tried it. I still can’t get my head round the fact that it all went as smoothly as it did; all of that down to the team’s calm approach, their willingness to pitch in, try new things and ability to make the right decisions at the right time. I’m so proud of everyone at Podmasters. So what does that look like in numbers? · 35k views on the livestream; at it’s peak, we had nearly 3,000 concurrent streamers and had nearly 14,000 hours viewed in total. · We had more viewers than the likes of the Daily Mail, Telegraph, Times Radio and Telegraph’s live streams throughout the night. · OGWN YouTube subscribers went up 62% in a week and we’ll break 10k by Monday. · A huge uptick in support across Patreon and via Apple Podcasts - the kind of direct support that is not only hugely meaningful but also allows us to invest in making this type of content. Podcasting (despite reports) isn’t a huge economy – there’s a real startup approach of doing things on a shoestring and when it goes right, it makes you realise how much can be achieved with the right attitude and motivation. Oh yea, and the result wasn’t bad either!
