Much bigger than The Shift. I’m not one to rant too often, but I was asked a question on the Shiftheads Facebook group about a petition to bring back my Show. Annie asked: Hello Shane. You know this Media business very well. Do you think sending a collective petition from us to CORUS would have an impact? We would like them to know how cruel it was to cancel the show at the threshold of Christmas and New year and also to let them realize the Shift was not an ordinary talk show. It was fresh, it was refreshing, it had a very unique format, it was fun, it was extremely informative with a myriad of very knowledgeable regular guests, and most of all the host and the producers were unbelievably awesome. They have canceled a gem. (End) And I wanted to share my response, in hopes that more people read it, and to perhaps shine a light on the amazing people who are working hard to accomplish what Annie wants: sustainable and successful radio. Hi Annie. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the Shift. Here is what I know about radio. There are some really great programmers and smart people trying to create a future for radio. I believe that some of these people at the helm are the right people to do just that. I also believe that radio is better when these local stations know you’re listening, and when they know what you want. So yes, kindly and productively tell them how you see the value of night time radio, the Shift or just the radio in general. Support the businesses that advertise on radio. Tell others why you love radio. I promise you this: these same people who are trying to make it work, want exactly the same things you do. Successful shows and content that connect with Canadians. I think sharing all of your favorite shows, hosts and moments with your friends and family and being ambassadors for radio is more productive than a petition. Now if you want to petition anybody, petition the federal government. This includes making sure your MP’s know the impact of a lack of timely regulation changes to support multi channel licensing so some companies can sell to others who want to be there. If you want to petition anyone, petition the bureaucrats who have a stranglehold on broadcast companies who pay millions into Canadian content development, while Netflix and other international streaming juggernauts don’t (didn’t) have to. Broadcast companies don’t want a free pass, they want a level playing field. Thank you for asking. Personally for me, please follow my personal page. Bengals Victory Lap Pt III 🐯🏃♂️: Television and longform video 📺 Leading for awareness... we are still accepting applicants for the Bengals CCO! DM for details. Now back to our story... Let's state the obvious since we are on a social platform. Shortform video dominates consumption habits, but longform video dominates revenue and impact. That's why the Bengals have invested so heavily in their two weekly TV series. As mentioned before, the content team size was virtually non-existent upon my arrival. Pre-2020, our magazine show, Bengals Weekly, was produced primarily by contractors, but when you have a pandemic, you reimagine your model. We hired our first production assistants that summer, production was moved in house, and the show was given a facelift. Between social media and Bengals Weekly, this would be the club's primary means to communicate with its fans during a limited attendance season, so it was important to retire our neo-2000s graphics package and upgrade some antiquated p2 cameras. As part of this overhaul, I put a lot of pressure on Marisa Contipelli to evolve her role as the team reporter into a seasoned storyteller and host of the show. She lived for the challenge, and her openness to change and personal development was inspiring. Marisa and collaborating producers Luke Johnson, Shea Stephenson, William Laterza, and Gary Topmiller have all provided personal touches making the show what it is today. Bengals Weekly would also be segmented for digital distribution and sponsorships creating multiple revenue streams with the same content. This combined with our efficient production model translated to a 600% ROI making Bengals Weekly one of the better revenue drivers at the club. In 2023, we introduced our flagship docuseries, From the Jungle. Many teams have their own version of a docuseries, but it was important to distinguish FTJ. Sr Producer Grant Gilkeson and I did this by focusing each episode through the lens of a single player; not just through storylines, but through narration by the players. This gave fans a different perspective than the traditional sit-down interview where you typically get generic answers and "player speak". Grant would give up a lot of sleep, literally, to ensure the success of FTJ and it paid off. From the Jungle quickly became the most watched content series per watch time. While the football season had its hurdles, FTJ capitalized on its opportunities. Not to mention, the show was profitable by a large margin in its first year and is expected to have a larger profit margin in its second. Shortform might reign supreme on the infinite scroll, but longform continues to make impact, generate revenue, and CREATE fans. With the individual leadership that exists within the Bengals productions team, I expect them to build on these successes for the foreseeable future.

FROM OUR GARAGE AT HOME - TO A LIVE BROADCAST FROM A HOTEL - WITH A STRANGE SENSE OF IRONY. **A long read, but it’s something I’m proud of** It’s really easy to not take some time to look back and see how far you have travelled on the journey of running your own business. I wanted to share this promo for a live broadcast of Four Wide, because this program that stemmed from an idea back in 2018 is a really poignant yard stick for me to look back and see how far we have come. Ironically, myself, David Mills, Alistair McKeen, Mike Nairn all sat at the Flying Horse in 2018 to talk about the idea for a program focussing on speedway because there wasn’t anything out there that did it, or at least there hadn’t been for a long time. It was to preview the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and it was to be made annually to see how it went. Millsy was General Manager or Premier Speedway at the time and was dubious about the idea because he was busy enough at that time of the year and didn’t need another thing to do. It managed to convince him and the others who owned local businesses to give me $800 each (I think) in return i would make a commercial and give them ‘spots’ on this new program. It was at this same meeting we coined the name ‘Four Wide’. The next day I erected temporary green screens in our garage, so I could create a graphic set to base this show out of - before some weeks later, recording the first episode of Four Wide ‘The Classic Edition’ Sadly the first show had to be re-recorded because the Mike’s dropped out - so I had to convince all these guys to come back to my garage again to do it all again. The two episode series went out once a week, a fortnight before the classic. Fitzmedia only had about 2,000 likes but it was really well received. To cut a really long story short, here we are, in 2023 - and this same show is now produced two or three times a month during speedway season, has a national / international following, and this years Classic Edition will be a full LIVE broadcast, with a LIVE Audience - at the very venue in which it was born back in 2018. The only changes in the show/ Four Wide Brand? it’s production value has improved, we broadcast the race meetings now, I no longer host it (thankfully - that’s another story), we have managed to do way more than we ever imagined thanks to zoom and the amazing skills of our technical team, and thanks to our audience growth I can sell ADVERTISING onto it, rather than ask for SPONSORSHIP to produce it like back in 2018. Some things that haven’t changed? I still edit/produce it, two of the original guys who believed in my idea are still on the panel, and we are creating pathways for other people in the industry to pursue their passion (speedway) via a role in the media - much like retired AFL players do on TV and Radio Four Wide really is a great way for me to measure how far our business has come as an independently ownedmedia company and I am so proud of it.
