🚍🌍 European Public Transport Sector Calls for Strong Support for Local Public Transport! 📝 In a new open letter, UITP, EMTA - European Metropolitan Transport Authorities, EPTO (European Passenger Transport Operators), Eurocities, IRU and POLIS Network join forces to call on the #EU Institutions to provide strong political and financial support to the public transport sector. Looking forward to the legislative term 2024-2029, the six associations emphasise the critical need for renewed focus and support for local public transport to meet Europe’s economic, social, and sustainability objectives. 🛣 🛤 The railway sector is not alone in advocating for fundamental amendments to the GFTP legislative proposals, especially concerning the #WeightsandDimensionsDirective (#WDD). According to the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the European Commission’s proposals at this stage are not “enough to make rail connections more attractive and reduce heavy traffic on the roads.” 🚦 For CoR members, promoting #intermodaltransport via #rail and #inlandwaterways is the only way forward for the European #freighttransport sector. Regulatory and economic measures should prioritise railways and waterways.
